Area Sports Briefs: Prep basketball playoffs begin tonight

The prep basketball playoffs start tonight with first-round games at higher seeds.
The only local teams at home are the West Rowan girls and North Rowan girls. West Rowan plays Robinson at 7 p.m. North Rowan hosts Franklin at 6 p.m.
East Rowan’s girls play at Central Davidson at 7 p.m., while Carson’s girls play at West Iredell at 7 p.m.
Davie’s girls play at West Forsyth at 7 p.m.
Salisbury’s girls open a doubleheader at East Burke and will play at 6:30 p.m.
Carson’s boys also are in the second game of a doubleheader and expect at 7:30 p.m. start time at Ashbrook.
Davie’s boys are in the second game of a doubleheader at Alexander Central and will play at 7:30 p.m.
Admission is $6 at some sites and $7 at others.
Full pairings for the 3A West brackets are in Scoreboard, along with the matchups involving teams in area conferences.

7th-grade hoops
Erwin’s boys won 48-29 against West Rowan Middle.
Gavin Sprinkle led the Eagles with 11 points. David Jordan had nine, and Jake Hunter scored seven.
The Eagles are at North Rowan on Thursday at 4 p.m.

College golf
Catawba’s men shot rounds of 327 and 306 and and are in 13th place in the Newberry Invitational with one round remaining.
Jordan Taylor led Catawba and is tied for 10th after a pair of 74s.

Catawba’s women are competing in the Converse Spring Invite.
Victoria Hedrick shot a 90 in the opening round to lead Catawba.

Hurley YMCA
The J.F. Hurley YMCA is taking registrations now for girls volleyball, spring soccer and flag football.
Girls volleyball registration ends on Feb. 27. The league is for grades 4-8.
The cost is $42 for Y members and $70 for potential members.
Soccer registration ends on March 21.
The program is for boys and girls, Pre-K through 8th grade.
The cost is $42 for members, $70 for potential members.

The league is for boys and girls, Pre-K through eighth grade.
The cost is $42 for members, $70 for potential members.

The CIAA tournament begins today in Charlotte.
Livingstone’s teams debut on Wednesday.
