China Grove High class of 1949 celebrates 65th reunion

China Grove High School’s class of 1949 celebrated its 65th reunion at China Grove Family House Restaurant on Saturday, Jan. 20. Loyd E. Hill (acting class president) welcomed the graduates and spouses or guests and began with a memorial for 33 deceased graduates. After each name was called, a glass ping was made to signify a time of tribute to their memory.

Roy Morris (class treasurer) gave the invocation and while waiting for dinner to be served, Hill held a free drawing for two of his recent novels, won by RJ Jones and Nan Graeber. Guests were acknowledged  — Becky Sifford, Mrs. Parnell, Ms. Teeter’s niece and Bud Graeber. Memorabilia of the past were passed around for all to enjoy.

Business was held and the group decided to hold another Reunion in six months at this location. The Planning Board was recognized as the following: Loyd Hill, Roy Morris, Patti Cooper, Doris Freeze, Bette Woods Parnell (now deceased), Nan Graeber, Bud Graeber and Hazel Hill Kirk

 

Rowan Redbuds to meet

The Rowan Redbuds Garden Club will meet Thursday, Feb. 25, at 1 p.m. in the Stanback Room, Rowan Public Library Headquarters, 201 W. Fisher St. Guests are always welcome. Kim Fahs, president. 704-754-8905.

 

Catawba music department to present ‘Journeys, a Musical Exploration of Time and Space’ 

Coming Sunday, Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. in the Dearborn-Omwake Chapel on the campus of Catawba College — “Journeys, a Musical Exploration of Time and Space.”

Under the Direction of Dr. Phillip E. Burgess, Assistant Prof. of Music, the Catawba Singers, Chamber Choir and PopAC will present a one hour program of music devoted to texts about the journey of life. Works by Randall Thompson, Molly Ijames, Mack Wilberg, The Turtles, Eric Clapton and Carly Simon will be presented.

Student conductors Hunter Safrit and Robert Thornton will lead the ensembles in several selections. The choirs are accompanied by Jacob Hahn and Susan Trivette. The program is free and open to the public. Prior to the concert, students musicians from Catawba’s award-winning Popular Music program will present the music of “Journey.”

Third Annual Western Carolina Cluster Founders’ Day Celebration

More than 325 graduate and undergraduate members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. in the Western Carolina Cluster joined together Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Sheraton Charlotte Airport Hotel to celebrate the sorority’s 108th Founders’ Day.

The Western Carolina Cluster, a part of the Mid-Atlantic Region, is composed of chapters from Asheville, Charlotte, Concord, Gastonia, Hickory and Salisbury. Joyce Henderson of Virginia serves as regional director for the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Charletta Wilson Jacks, international secretary, was the invited guest speaker for the celebration. Jacks is a graduate of Howard University and Clark Atlanta University. Presently she serves as the planning director for Atlanta, Ga.

Jacks’ topic focused on leadership and community service. She reminded those in attendance to serve the community, be a servant follower and leader, and to be committed to lifelong membership. Putting those qualities into practice she promised the more than 300 attendees, “The Best is yet to Come.”

Patrice Wright, Western Carolina Cluster coordinator and Lillian L. Morgan, president of Delta Xi Omega Chapter of Salisbury, also participated in the program.

Western Carolina Cluster Community Service Project

Members of each chapter participated in a unified community service project that focused on issues facing homeless individuals and families as well as domestic violence victims and survivors.

The members of Delta Xi Omega donated toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, hairbrushes, combs and sanitizing wipes to the Family Crisis Council of Rowan County. Elizabeth Sippel, community coordinator with Family Crisis Council, was invited to the Jan. 16 meeting to receive the Care Kits.

This community service projects falls within the program target of Family Strengthening, which seeks to assist those in homeless shelters, women’s shelters or other agencies of assistance.
