Title 1 accepting applications for pre-kindergarten

The Rowan-Salisbury School System’s Title I program is now accepting applications for children to enroll in pre-kindergarten programs to be held at North Rowan and Hanford Dole elementary schools.

The programs are scheduled to start in August. Transportation will not be provided; however, students who live in the Hanford Dole and North Rowan attendance areas will be permitted to ride the regular school bus.

To be eligible, a child must:

• be 4 years of age on or before Aug. 31;
• demonstrate an educational need;
• have a completed application returned by March 4.

Applications can be picked up in the school office or at the Title I Parent Resource Center located at 314 N. Ellis St., Salisbury.

Morgan Gray Scholarship available

The deadline for applying for the Morgan R. Gray Memorial Scholarship Fund is March 31. The amount of the scholarship has not yet been determined, but almost $8,000 has been awarded since 2005.

The scholarship is for Rowan County students who were home-schooled during their junior and senior years and was established in memory of 11-year-old Morgan Gray, a Rowan County homeschool student who died in an automobile accident in 2001.

Applicants must be a full-time student accepted by a college, university, nursing, business or trade school, present evidence of good character by participation in extracurricular activities including community affairs, church, employment and other endeavors and show proof of home schooling during the junior and senior years of high school.

Unlike many scholarships, this one is open to any full-time college student meeting these requirements, not just rising freshmen. Funds may be used for tuition, books, and/or school supplies. Previous applicants may re-apply for this scholarship.

An evening with college admissions directors at Cannon School

Cannon School will host Sally Richmond, vice president for admissions and financial aid at Washington & Lee University and Barbara Polk, deputy director of undergraduate admissions at UNC, on Monday, Feb. 22, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts on the campus at 5801 Poplar Tent Road. Richmond and Polk will speak to parents about the college admission process. The program will consist of a question-and-answer session, with speakers relying on their extensive years of experience in the admissions profession.

The event is free and open to parents of high school-aged students in the larger community. The school asks that parents bring questions about preparing their children for higher education opportunities, the admission process, and the financial aid and scholarship process.
