Prep track: Two state titles for West’s Sanders

West Rowan’s boys indoor track team finished second to Weddington in Friday’s 3A State Championships held in Winston-Salem.
West scored 51 points. Weddington had 58.
J.T. Sanders won two events, taking the 300 in 35.40 seconds and the 500 in 1:05.84.
West’s Juwan Houston took second in the 55 hurdles in 7.69 seconds.
West’s Javon Quarles placed fourth in the 55-meter dash in 6.56 seconds.
West’s Joel-Thomas Morales placed seventh in the long jump (19 feet, 3 inches) and the triple jump (39-4).
West’s 4×200 relay team of Thomas-Morales, Houston, Quarles and Kortez Weeks placed third in 1:33.71.
West’s 4×400 relay team of Weeks, Thomas-Morales, Houston and Michael Anton placed second in 3:31.14.

Carson’s Zachary Marchinko was fifth in the 3200 in 9:46.26.
Nick Cox was ninth in the 1000 in 2:45.85.
Carson’s 4×800 relay team of Jacob Higgins, Garrett Ingold, Dylan Koontz and Cox placed sixth in 8:28.03.

East Rowan’s Devaniel Dale was seventh in the 300 in 36.96.
East’s Lee Sharum was ninth in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet.

East Rowan’s Brittany Small placed second in the girls high jump in the 3A state indoor meet on Friday. Small cleared 5 feet, 2 inches.

East’s Taylor Kirk won the wheelchair shot put in the 3A indoor track state meet with a personal-best throw of 8 feet, 10 inches.
It was the third championship for Kirk.

West Rowan’s Josie Heglar was fifth in the 1000 in 3:09.32.
West’s Brienna Owens was seventh in the 500 in 1:25.56.
