Catawba’s February Forum explores ‘Hamlet,’ the world’s most famous play
William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” has been translated into almost every known language and is still performed worldwide more often than any other play ever written.
What is there about the language, characters, plot and ideas that has allowed this play to hold the world’s stage for so long?
Dr. Bethany Sinnott, English Professor Emerita at Catawba College and well-known Shakespeare scholar, will provide an answer to that question at the next Catawba College Community Forum on Tuesday evening, Feb. 16, setting the stage for a community reading of Hamlet that Sinnott will lead, one act at a time (for a total of five acts), beginning at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23 and continuing on consecutive Tuesdays at 7 p.m. through March 22 at Catawba’s downtown Salisbury storefront, Downtown Catawba, in the Plaza Building, 100 W. Innes St., Suite 103.
This community reading, sponsored by Catawba’s English Department, will use the Folger Shakespeare Library paperback edition of Hamlet. A limited number of copies will be available for use by those community members who attend one or more of the readings.
The forum will be held in Tom Smith Auditorium of Ralph W. Ketner Hall. Admission, as always, is free.
Work call for ‘The Parchman Hour’

6-week hand and wheel pottery class

Beginning knitting
A class for the person who has never touched knitting needles but has always wanted to try. Only four things will be taught in this class: cast on, knit, purl, and cast off. We will practice on a long narrow scarf and learn many of the ways you can combine just knit and purl. Meetings are on two separate Wednesdays and everyone should leave at the end with a finished scarf. Classes: Feb. 24 and March 2, at the Center for Faith and the Arts, 207 W. Meet the Artists opening reception is Friday, Feb. 12 from 6-8 p.m. Informal gallery talks with the artists begin at 5 p.m.
“Up Close & Far Away: Through an Environmental Lens” will feature artists who explore current environmental issues. Jeff Rich, a photographer whose work focuses on watershed issues ranging from recreation and sustainability to exploitation and abuse; and Jim Lee, whose still-life series composed of artifacts and remains, gathered in the field and photographed in his North Carolina studio will be featured in solo exhibitions. Durham environmental artist Bryant Holsenbeck will work with local middle school and college students to create large, site-specific waterfall installations using recycled water bottles, featured throughout the museum. The FirstARTS series of First United Methodist Church, 217 S. Church St., www. fumcsalisbury.org, continues its eighth season Friday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m., with a concert featuring Dallas, Texas-based flute virtuoso Timothy Hagen, joined by pianist James Douglass. Dr. Hagen is an internationally acclaimed flutist who has performed with orchestras throughout the United States. As a solo artist, he has performed at New York’s Lincoln Center and 92nd Street Y and appeared at numerous music festivals. His program will feature music of Carl Maria von Weber, Frühling, Respighi, and an original composition by the performing artist. FUMC’s FirstARTS series is free and open to the public.
