Ticket sales to open for Virginia steam locomotive excursions

ROANOKE, VA. — The Virginia Museum of Transportation announces that ticket sales for Norfolk & Western Class J 611 steam locomotive excursions, aboard the finest steam passenger locomotive ever built, will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 15.

The first excursions will be The Roanoker on Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24, leaving from Greensboro and traveling round trip to Roanoke, Va. There will be a layover in Roanoke, allowing passengers time to enjoy lunch at one of the many nearby restaurants and visit the Virginia Museum of Transportation. The excursion will then re-board and travel back to Greensboro.

Following the first excursions, on May 7 and 8 there will be half-day trips aboard The Powhatan Arrow from Roanoke to Lynchburg, Va., and The Pelican from Roanoke to Walton (Radford), Va.

The 2016 steam excursion schedule will end June 4 and 5 with three half-day excursions aboard The American from Manassas, Va., to Front Royal, Va.
