Pruning is always a hot topic for Cooperative Extension. People want to know how to tend to their shrubs and fruit trees.

Last week, I wrote about the Peach Growers Conference. That brought me a lot of attention concerning pruning. I was reminded by many readers that it had been a few years since a proper peach pruning demonstration was conducted.

I try to provide what the community needs. You all have spoken, so there will be another Peach Pruning Workshop this year with something a little extra.

Davidson and Rowan County Cooperative Extension will host a Peach Pruning and Tree Fruit Workshop. There will be two parts to the program. The peach pruning will be in the morning of Feb. 17 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Huffman Peaches, located at 4825 Goodman Lake Road, Salisbury. There is no limit of participants. The second portion will begin at 1 p.m. at the Davidson County Extension office at 301 E. Center St., Lexington. The second portion is limited to 30 participants.

While we are at Huffman Peaches, participants will learn how to properly prune young and mature peach trees. They will also learn about the open center style of pruning. If you really want to test out your skills, be sure to bring your own pruning shears. You will be guided through making the proper cuts. You will even get to learn about Huffman’s Peaches and their orchard.

The last portion of the program is in a class setting. Attendees will learn about growing fruit trees in our area and how to get the best fruit. Dr. Mike Parker from North Carolina State University will be the instructor for both sessions. Parker has extensive experience with apples, peaches, pears and pecans. The entire class portion will run from 1-4 p.m.

RSVPs are required to attend this free event. Participants do not have to attend both sessions, but if you are only attending one, we need to know that when you register.
