Area Sports Briefs: Livingstone men, Catawba women win

Livingstone’s men won high-scoring CIAA basketball game with Virginia Union, 108-103, here at New Trent Gym on Wednesday night.
The Blue Bears snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 9-14 overall and 4-7 in the CIAA. Virginia Union falls to 12-12 and 5-7 in the conference.
Ty Newman led Livingstone with a game-high 30 points and also grabbed eight rebounds.
Eric Dubose followed Newman with 23 points while Daryl Trynham scored 20 and dished out 11 assists.
Nasir Austin scored 14 points and Cordero Holt added 10 as Livingstone had five players in double figures. Austin also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Ray Anderson paced the Panthers with 29 points, Kory Cooley followed with 26 and Tavon Mealy contributed 14. Danny McElroy had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Both teams stayed hot throughout the game, both shooting 50 percent from the field.
Livingstone shot an amazing 83 percent from the foul line, making 30 of 36 free throws.
The Blue Bears return to action on Saturday with a CIAA contest at Shaw (Raleigh) at 4 p.m.
Catawba women
The Catawba women’s basketball team garnered its third consecutive win with a 75-62 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference action Wednesday night at Goodman Gym.
Catawba’s Bri Johnson led all scorers with 20 points . Jada Huntley scored 17.
Catawba (11-10, 8-7) took the lead on a 3-pointer by Emma Ucinski to start the game and led all the way.
Catawba shot 42.9 percent.
Catawba led 42-31 at halftime.
Lenoir-Rhyne (6-12, 5-9) got 17 points from Shelly Harper, 13 from Jasmine Stafford and 12 from Brooke Robinson.
Catawba will start its first of three straight road games on Saturday afternoon at Carson-Newman.
Prep wrestling
A.L. Brown will be the host team for two rounds of the 4A wrestling playoffs tonight.
The Wonders wrestle against Lake Norman in a third-round match, while West Forsyth wrestles against Southeast Guilford.
The winners will then meet in the regional final.
Prep soccer
East Rowan’s Kelby Porter signed with Belmont Abbey on Wednesday.
Carson’s Megan Bolick signed with Barton on Wednesday.
Prep basketball
South Rowan lost to Central Cabarrus 64-53 in SPC boys basketball on Tuesday.
Ian Bradshaw led the Raiders (0-20, 0-14 SPC) with 15 points. Colson Childers scored 14, Ahmod Hester had nine, and Tre Littlejohn added eight.

Davie’s boys lost 71-69 to Reagan in CPC action on Wednesday when the Raiders banked in a shot at the buzzer.
Davie (12-8, 4-5 CPC) got 16 points from Heath Slabach and 14 from Cooper Wall.

Emma Slabach scored 15 points as Davie’s girls (13-8, 6-3 SPC) won 54-41 against Reagan on Wednesday.
Ashlyn Hampton had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Madison Zaferatos scored 10 points.
7th-grade hoops
Erwin’s boys defeated Corriher-Lipe 46-29 on Wednesday.
Leading the way for the Eagles was Colby Patterson with 14 points. David Jordan scored 11.
Devon Shaver and Vincent Jones had solid games.
The Eagles will host Southeast today.
NCHSAA
Paul Neil of Reagan and Nyona Shields of Union Pines were named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards.
Neil, a senior swimmer for Reagan, capped off his career at the recent conference meet with wins in the 200 IM and 100 Breast Stroke, setting Central Piedmont 4A Conference records in both events.
Shields, a junior point guard for the Union Pines Lady Vikings, scored a total of 57 points last week in three games against conference foes Terry Sanford, Westover, and Douglas Byrd.
