Area Sports Briefs: South girls win on road

HARRISBURG — South Rowan’s girls basketball team got a combined 45 points from Janiya Downs, Riley Corriher and Taziah Hardin en route to a 61-50 South Piedmont Conference victory over Central Cabarrus on Tuesday.
Downs led the scoring for the Raiders (4-16, 3-11 SPC) with 18 points, while Corriher followed with 14 and Hardin added 13.
Mahaley Holit led the Vikings (11-10, 7-8) with a game-high 27 points.
South jumped ahead early against the Vikings, leading 16-5 after one quarter and 30-10 at halftime.
The Raiders were up by 24 in the second half when coach John Davis pulled his starters. A 22-10 fourth quarter for Central Cabarrus made the score closer.
“The girls played well, both offensively and defensively,” Davis said.

Carson splits

Carson’s girls earned a big SPC win by beating Concord 38-33 in China Grove on Tuesday.
Olivia Gabriel scored 14 points for the Cougars (12-9, 8-7 SPC), who moved back into a tie for third.
Anne Marie Turney scored nine points.
Carson got a boost from the return to action by McKenzie Gadson. She scored five points.

Carson’s boys were outscored 94-66 by the second-ranked Spiders.
Jailen Williams led the Cougars (11-10, 7-8 SPC) with 15 points. Owen White scored 11, Cameron Prugh had nine, Malon Herron-Cuthbertson scored eight, and Jamarius Hairston had seven.

Wonders fall
Hough’s Ben Topp scored 39 points, including 19-for-19 from the foul line, as the Huskies beat A.L. Brown 68-51 on Tuesday.

SPC
Hickory Ridge romped 77-12 against Northwest Cabarrus in SPC basketball on Tuesday.
Sixth-ranked Hickory Ridge was led by Sydney Miller with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Ragin’ Bulls led 59-7 at halftime.

Daniel Spencer scored 27 points to lead Robinson’s boys to a 76-66 win against Cox Mill.
Wendell Moore scored 20 and Jonathan Earl had 18 for the Chargers.

Prep wrestling
A.L. Brown won in the first two rounds of the 4A dual team state playoffs.
Wrestling at Charlotte Independence, the Wonders topped McDowell 38-33 and beat Providence 39-29.
The Wonders will wrestle against Lake Norman in the West semifinals on Thursday. Also alive are Southeast Guilford and West Forsyth. Southeast Guilford and West Forsyth are both unbeaten.

Davie County wrestlers won 40-31 against South Caldwell in first-round action at Lake Norman but fell to Lake Norman 34-28 in the second round.

Rowan LL Softball
Rowan Little League softball will be the host for the Southeast Regional for three age divisions: Junior League (ages 12-14), Senior League (13-16) and Big League (14-18).
The regionals will be held on July 21-24 and will include state champions from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Virginia, West Virginia and Alabama.

Salisbury Academy
Salisbury Academy finished second in the jayvee boys basketball conference tournament behind Hickory Christian.
SA’s Josh Portillo and Bryce Mason made the all-tournament team.
North Hills finished fifth. Que Sloan made the all-tournament team.
Sacred Heart finished sixth. Deuce Walker made the all-tournament team.

Salisbury Academy’s boy varsity team went overtime to defeat Hickory Christian.
Hank Robins hit a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime and also hit the game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer.
Charlie Barr led the Jaguars with 10 points. Marshall Overcash scored eight for the undefeated Jaguars.
The Jaguars play at home today against Sacred Heart. The WCCAA tournament is at Salisbury Academy this Saturday.

Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart’s varsity girls won 33-21 against North Hills.
Rachel McCullough scored 13 points, and Alyssa Lopez scored seven. Jackie Moore and McKayla Jackson led the defense.

Statesville Christian won the six-team jayvee girls conference tournament with a 22-8 victory over runner-up Concordia. Hickory Christian beat North Hills 17-15 for third. Salisbury Academy won 20-4 against Sacred Heart for fifth.
Anna Teague (North Hills), Abby Lawson (Salisbury Academy) and Gianna Patella (Sacred Heart) made all-tournament.

West Junior Legion
An informational meeting for players and parents interested in the West Rowan Junior Legion program will be held on Monday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. at the West Rowan High School Library.
The Junior Legion baseball team is for players born on Jan. 1, 1999, or later.

Davidson County Community College won 117-93 against Central Carolina CC in Sanford on Monday.
Tre Williams (Carson) had eight points, six assists and four rebounds for the Storm (22-2).

NCHSAA
Sites are set for the NCHSAA regional basketball finals slated for Saturday, March 5.
In a change from previous years, regional semifinals will not be played at a neutral site. They’ll be hosted by the higher seed.
In Fayetteville, games will be played at both the Crown Arena and Crown Coliseum. Fayetteville has been the host city for the Eastern Regional sinals since the 2010-11 season.
Unlike last year, when Winston Salem games were played in both the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum (LJVM) and the Annex, only four games will be played in Winston Salem this year, all in LJVM.
After a one-year absence, the city of Greensboro returns to the regional mix, with the UNC Greensboro serving as the site for the other four final games of the Western Regionals.
The winners from the regional finals advance to state championship games in Chapel Hill on March 12.

Local golf
Sixty-seven GARS members played a Captain’s Choice at Corbin Hills.
The first-place team with a minus-12 consisted of Winsten Mahaffey, Bobby Clark, Clive Mahaffey and Buddy Barger.
Three teams tied for second place with a minus-9. The team of Bob Niekras, David Adams, Johnny Shook and Larry Fowler won a score card play off for second place.
The third-place team consisted of Guy Schenck, Don Martin, Gary Schenk and Ron Ervin.
The fourth-place team was Linn Safely, Donnie Burris, Mickey Ousley and Gary Morgan.
Closest to the pin on No. 2 was Donnie Burris.
The longest putt on No. 9 was made by Barger.

Jayvee girls
Caron’s girls won 36-25 against Concord on Tuesday.
Katie Jewell scored 11 points, Zoie Lee had 10, and Nancy Gamewell had eight.
Defensive standouts for the Cougars (18-0) were Taylor Harwood, Sarah Christie and Montana Gurganious.

7th-grade hoops
Erwin’s girls won 39-15 against North Rowan.
Carleigh Perry scored 12 points, Lani Isley had 10, and Jenna Robinson scored nine.

Deacs fall to Clemson
WINSTON-SALEM — Jaron Blossomgame had 22 points and 13 rebounds to help Clemson beat Wake Forest 76-62 on Tuesday night, earning a second road Atlantic Coast Conference win to keep the Tigers near the top of the league standings.
Jordan Roper scored all 16 of his points after halftime for the Tigers (14-8, 7-3 ACC), who went from scoring just 20 points in the first 20 minutes to scoring 56 after halftime.
