Picking for the Master features the Back Creek Bluegrass Boys and special friend, Tori Jones

Calling all Bluegrass Lovers! Looking for a nice, warm, family environment to enjoy some good local music? You are all invited out to Picking for the Master hosted by Trading Ford Baptist Church 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29. Come and enjoy listening as “Back Creek Bluegrass Boys” play the opening set with an inspiring mix of hot bluegrass gospel- with some awesome fast picking! This local Rowan County band loves to share their heartfelt songs of faith. After they play, all pickers are invited to then join in for a jam session that will conclude the evening. Concessions will be available and doors will open at 6 p.m. There is no admission charge, but the hat will be passed to help bring in more talent in future months. The Back Creek Bluegrass Boys have literally grown up together at Back Creek Presbyterian Church in Mount Ulla and all share a love for bluegrass. They have been playing together for three years and have performed in bluegrass festivals and venues across the state • The band is Daniel Thrailkill, 18, lead vocalist, guitarist, mandolin player • Will Thrailkill, 20, bass • John Lee, 14, 5-string banjo • James Lee, 11, mandolin •  Newest addition, Tori Jones, 17, the bluegrass fiddle • John and James Lee are the sons of Jim and Judy Lee from Mount Ulla. Will and Daniel Thrailkill are the sons of the Rev. Bill and Angela Thrailkill, also from Mount Ulla. Tori Jones is the daughter of Michael and Jodi Jones from Linwood.

 

‘Lullabies’ dates added

Due to the weather, Lee Street theatre had to cancel last week’s performance of “Broadway Lullabies.” To compensate, performances have been added. The new schedule is • Tonight, Jan. 28, at 7:30 p.m.  • Friday, Jan. 29, at 7:30 p.m.  • Saturday, Jan 30, at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m.  • Sunday, Jan. 31, at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m.

 

KHA hosts Eddie Ray of the NC Music Hall of Fame and Museum at Monday’s meeting

KANNAPOLIS — Kannapolis History Associates host Eddie Ray, a 2009 inductee and veteran music industry executive who now serves as vice chairman and operations director of the NC Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Come learn more about his music career that spans several decades. He will share how he has been directly involved in the successful careers of such great artists as Fats Domino, Ricky Nelson, Slim Whitman, The Osmonds, Lou Rawls, Hank Williams Jr., Sammy Davis Jr., Al Green, Pink Floyd, Johnny Rivers, Mike Curb and others. KHA meets Monday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. in the A. New panthers fight song

The Carolina Panthers fans have a new song to rally behind their team. “Panthers On The Prowl,” written by Joe Matthews and performed by Chiefs Choice, has been making a splash in the local music circles and getting thousands of shares on Facebook. The song was written at the beginning of the NFL season and has gained momentum with each Panthers win. Chiefs Choice is made up of Joe “Chief” Matthews on guitar, vocals and keyboards; Denise Scott Bradford on percussion; and Mike Shelton, lead guitar and vocals. See them live at The Muddy Creek Cafe, 5455 Bethania Road, Winston-Salem, on Thursday nights. KAA-MaCC Black history celebration

KANNAPOLIS — The Kannapolis African-American Museum and Cultural Center Inc. (KAA-MaCC) will sponsor its first Black History Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Bethel Baptist Church Enrichment Center. The program will start at 1 p.m. and will feature the H. L. McCrorey YMCA of Greater Charlotte Senior African Drummers and Praise Dancers. Also, there will be a children’s storyteller, Suzette Davis of Livingstone College; guest speaker, Larry B. Johnson, Morgan State University English Professor; and the G. W. Carver School Alumni Community Choir. The program is free to the public and refreshments will be served.

Kathy Vestal will speak on Thursday, Feb. 18, from 6-7:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Haven Lutheran Church, at 207 W. Harrison St. Vestal will share from her personal experience and studies in the interplay between religion and sexual orientation, a topic about which many churches and denominations are currently in discussion, as laws and surrounding culture are shifting. Vestal serves on the faculty at Rowan Cabarrus Community College and has a master of education degree from UNC-Greensboro and a master of divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. She is passionate about race, gender, religious, and LGBT issues, and has spoken in numerous church and university settings in North Carolina and Virginia. This event, sponsored by Salisbury-Rowan PFLAG, is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available at 6 p.m. for a time of informal greetings and interaction. Vestal will speak rom 6:30 to 7, followed by a time for questions.

‘Flicks at The Davis’ returns

CONCORD — “Flicks at the Davis” returns this Friday, Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. on the Davis Theatre screen. This Friday’s screening of the cult classic “A Princess Bride” was chosen by the Cabarrus Arts Council’s young adult arts advocacy group, Art on Tap. The movie series is open to the public and is only $5 at the door.
