The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education will review prototypes for a new, consolidated elementary school Monday.

The plans will be presented at the board’s monthly business meeting, which is held in the Long Street boardroom at 110 S. Long St.

At their Jan. 11 meeting, the board moved to pay $10,350 per acre for a parcel of land located in the Woodleaf tax district at the intersection of N.C. 801 and Godbey Road during a closed session. The plot will be the site for a new western elementary school after Cleveland and Woodleaf elementary schools are consolidated.

At the last meeting, the board requested five prototypes from sfL+a Architects, a firm contracted to conduct a long-range facilities plan on the district’s elementary school. A representative from the firm will be presenting floor plans for the board to review, including a floor plan similar to that of Shive and Koontz elementary, and a two-story, energy efficient plan.

The board will also review the December 2015 budget resolution. The resolution shows that in December, the state textbook allotment was reduced $578,007 in order to cover the APPLE lease payment. According to the budget resolution attached to the board’s agenda, this reduces the textbook allotment budget to zero.

In addition, the system received a state increase of $818,939, $513,205 of which was added to the transportation fund, bringing the total transportation budget to $4,223,697. The resolution shows that $29,000 was transferred from the State Academically/Intellectually Gifted Fund to State Instructional Classroom Supplies to cover the arts program.

Local funding increased by $16,000, $6,000 of which was appropriated to cover the consulting cost when the system contracted a firm to help with the recruitment of a new chief financial officer.

The Jan. 25 Board of Education meeting will begin at 4 p.m., in accordance with a motion made at the Jan. 11 work session.

Other business to be discussed:

  • An update on the construction of the Wallace Educational Forum.
  • Submitting an advertisement for sealed bids on the Long Street property.
  • Discussion on conducting a resource efficacy study and an energy use assessment.
