Delta Sigma Theta observes Founders Day

Submitted

The Salisbury Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority recently observed Founders Day with a weekend celebration.

The sorority was founded Jan. 13, 1913 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. is a private non-profit organization of college-educated women whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world.

The Salisbury Alumnae Chapter sponsored, hosted and took part in several Founders Day events. Continuing their dedication and support to Livingstone College, the chapter annually gives a  scholarship to deserving students. The local chapter was spotted cheering on the Livingstone CIAA boys’ championship basketball team to victory.

Because the sorority is founded on Christian principals, the members worshiped together at Ardis Chapel AME Zion church, where they again made a monetary donation to be used toward the educational fund.

As part of the Physical and Mental Involvement program, the Deltas collected and donated 80 pairs of socks to the NC Veteran’s Home, Building 10. In addition to the donations, the ladies presented a program of songs, poems and words of inspiration.

The weekend celebration culminated with a fellowship dinner at Thelma’s Family Restaurant where awards were presented for 25 and 50 years of membership.

Levonia Corry, Roslind Lindsay, Martha Fleming and Carolyn Anderson each received am award for 50 years of service.

Cassandra Brown, Monica Green and Eugenia Caldwell were each recognized for 25 years.

The Salisbury chapter of Delta Sigma Theta is dedicated to carrying on the tradition whose collective endeavor is to promote academic excellence, provide scholarships, serve the under-served and highlight political issues and  provide solutions in the community.

Ruby Steele is president of the local chapter, Natalie Rivers is chair of program planning and Linda Stoner is director of public relations.
