Rowan County Emergency Services

The strong storm system which began in the early morning hours will continue across the area — with some additional  amounts of snow, sleet and freezing rain, gradually changing to all snow early Saturday morning. Snow showers are expected to taper off by Saturday afternoon.

While damaging ice accumulation will occur in some areas of the Piedmont, it appears that for the most part, Rowan County may be spared the major blow of large, significant ice accumulation which was possible from this storm due to a slight shift of the storm to the southeast. Conditions continue to be monitored closly in the event a shift of the storm increases the possibility of utililty outages.  Local utility crews are on standby to address these issues should they occur.

DOT and municipal street crews continue to work diligently across the county to clear major throughfares and travel routes, once these are complete additional emphasis will be placed on secondary roads and streets. Travel remains a serious threat and motorists are encouraged not to travel unless necessary. Due to citizens cooperating and heeding this warning, a minimum number of accidents across the county occurred today.

The winter storm warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Saturday.

Rowan County emergency operations center will remain at a level 3 activation status for the remainder of the weekend to stand ready to assist with any response and recovery issues.
