Area Sports Briefs: Prep basketball returns tonight

Local high school basketball teams return to action tonight after taking a break for exams.
The key girls matchup is East Davidson at North Rowan. Those two teams are tied for first in the CCC with 2-0 records. East Davidson is undefeated and ranked second in 2A. North Rowan (10-4) has won its last five games.

There’s also a key CCC boys game tonight with ninth-ranked Salisbury playing at Thomasville. Both teams are undefeated in the CCC.

West Rowan’s girls return to action at Robinson and are in first place in the SPC after a big win at Hickory Ridge.
Carson hosts Central Cabarrus. East Rowan hosts Cox Mill.
Local golf
Dave Fortson made a hole-in-one on No. 16 at Warrior.
Fortson used a 15 wood from the gold tees. The hole was playing 135 yards.
Mike Reid and Steve Fulcher witnessed the shot.
8th-grade hoops
Erwin’s girls won 55-36 against Knox. Adalie Harrison scored 21 points for the Eagles (10-4), while Maci Cooper had 20.
Women’s hoops
Shay Steele (West Rowan) had 18 points and eight rebounds for Morehead State on Thursday in a 90-81 loss to SIU Edwardsville.

Avery Locklear (South Rowan) scored 10 points for UNC Pembroke in Wednesday’s 75-63 win against Francis Marion.

Columbia’s Alison Sobataka (West Rowan) played all 40 minutes and scored 10 points in a 75-74 win against St. Andrews on Wednesday.

Texas Tech’s Brielle Blaire (North Rowan) had four points, seven rebounds and two blocks in a 69-48 loss to TCU.
College hoops
Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) scored 25 points for Augusta in Wednesday’s 92-87 win against Armstrong.

Tre Williams (Carson) had 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists for Davidson County Community College in a 117-98 win against Sandhills CC.
Salisbury Academy
Salisbury Academy’s varsity girls won 21-11 against Park Ridge Christian. Taron Lilly led the Jaguars with eight points.

Marshall Overcash scored 10 points and Nicholas Peltz and Mitch Jeter had six apiece as Salisbury Academy’s varsity boys rolled 42-21 against Park Ridge Christian.
China Grove sign-ups
Youth baseball and softball registrations start Jan. 16 at Dale’s Sporting Goods in China Grove and last until Feb. 20.
Fees are: BASEBALL: 5-6 Coach Pitch $65; 7-8 Pitching Machine $65.00; 9-10; Junior Division $65.00; and 11-12 Senior Division $65.00.
SOFTBALL: 6-9 Machine Pitch 65.00; 10-12 Senior Division (Girls Pitch) $65.00.
After Feb. 8 late fee is $75.
