Summer camp fair

Peruse exhibits and talk with representatives from a wide variety of local and regional summer camp programs at Salisbury Academy’s annual Summer Camp Fair. The fair will be held Wednesday, Jan. 20, from noon to 5:30 p.m. at Salisbury Academy.
 
Exhibitors include: Camp Hollymont, Camp Rockmont, Catawba College Center for the Environment, Green River, Horizons, JLT Fieldhouse, Partners in Learning, Piedmont Players, the Rowan Museum, Salisbury Academy, Skyland Camp, Waterworks and the YMCA.
Davidson College

RCCC

Rowan-Cabarrus Community College recently announced a new truck-driving training program to be offered at the college in early 2016.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, median pay for truck drivers is $38,200 per year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that employment for truck drivers is expected to grow 11 percent from 2012 to 2022. Consisting of extensive classroom instruction as well as range and road driving, the program will prepare students for the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) final test, which will be administered at the conclusion of the course. Rowan-Cabarrus is offering this program in partnership with Caldwell Community College.

The program at Rowan-Cabarrus will cover proper driving procedures, safe driver responsibility, commercial motor vehicle laws and regulations, and the basic principles and practices for operating commercial vehicles. The coursework includes motor vehicle laws and regulations, map reading, vehicle maintenance, safety procedures, daily logs, defensive driving, and freight handling.

The training program is set to run Feb. 15–April 19. The Rowan-Cabarrus course is certified by the Professional Truck Driving Institute (PTDI). PTDI is the first nonprofit organization to develop uniform skills performance, curriculum and certification standards for the trucking industry and to award course certification to entry-level truck driver finishing programs.

The next information session to learn more is being held Thursday, Jan. 14, from 10 a.m–noon at the West Avenue Center in Kannapolis. A mandatory orientation will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 20, from 10 a.m.–noon at the college’s West Avenue Center Campus in Kannapolis.

Scholarships available

AgCarolina Farm Credit announces 27 college scholarships are available and will be awarded in the coming months.

Five FFA scholarships are available to FFA members who are high school seniors, along with two scholarships to students attending North Carolina A&T State University. Recipients must be residents of eastern North Carolina. The scholarship program is part of the cooperative’s corporate giving program, the Fund for Rural North Carolina. Applications are due by April 30.

Students who are enrolled in an agricultural related degree at North Carolina State University may apply for one of five $2,000 scholarships. Recipients must be children or grandchildren of customers of AgCarolina Farm Credit. Students must apply directly to NCSU. Applications are due by Feb. 17.

In addition, five $750 scholarships will be awarded to students enrolled in the Ag Institute at North Carolina State University. Recipients must be children or grandchildren of an AgCarolina customer. Students must apply directly to NCSU.  Applications are due by Feb. 17.

Ten $1,000 “At-Large” college scholarships will be awarded to recipients who are attending or plan to attend a 4-year college or university within the state of North Carolina. The “At-Large” scholarships are non-degree specific and recipients must be the children or grandchildren of customers of AgCarolina Farm Credit. Deadline for applications is April 30.

AgCarolina Farm Credit is a farmer owned financial cooperative with headquarters in Raleigh. They are the leading provider of credit to farmers in central and eastern North Carolina. AgCarolina Farm Credit has over $1.4 billion in loans and commitments outstanding to nearly 3,000 North Carolina farmers. Davidson County Community College 

Davidson County Community College with offer two classes taught by Fulbright Scholars. Irish Language for Beginners and Arabic for Beginners will be taught in the Spring 2016 semester. Fergal Rafferty and Omar Khedr both taught language classes last semester and will continue to educate the DCCC campus in the spring. To enroll, contact 336-224-4545.

Food Lion to offer scholarships

Food Lion, together with Coca-Cola Zero and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), once again offer the Food Lion Essay Contest as part of the 2016 CIAA Basketball Tournament. A total of $35,000 in scholarship grants will be awarded to CIAA students.

Students of the CIAA are encouraged to submit a 500 to 700 word essay answering the question: “How is safety on campus impacting your CIAA school and what changes would you like to see happen?”
The contest will run through Saturday, Jan. 23. Four grand prize winners will be chosen to receive a $5,000 scholarship. They will also receive two tickets to the 2016 CIAA Basketball Tournament, Feb. 27- 28 and two nights of hotel accommodations, along with $500 for travel expenses. In addition, 15 first place winners will also be awarded $1,000 scholarships.

Autism Parent Support Group

The Autism Society of North Carolina is interested in forming a parent support group for families living in Rowan County and will be holding an organizational meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 26 to:

  • to plan for the frequency and format of future meetings and activities,
  • go over protocol for being an Autism Society of North Carolina parent support group, and
  • assign responsibilities and tasks related to organizing and planning future meetings.
