Area Sports Briefs: NC Hall of Fame class announced

The N.C. Sports Hall of Fame inductees for 2016 are Rod Brind’Amour (hockey), Sleepy Floyd (basketball), David Fox (swimming), James “Rabbit” Fulghum (baseball), Antawn Jamison (basketball), Haywood Jeffires (football), Freddy Johnson (basketball), Ray Price (drag racing) and Susan Yow (basketball).
They will be enshrined during the 53rd annual induction banquet on Friday, May 6, at the Raleigh Convention Center. The N.C. Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1963.

NSSA
Chris Berman, Billy Packer, Gary Smith and the late David Halberstam headline the honorees for the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association’s Hall of Fame.
They will be inducted during the 57th Annual NSSA Awards Weekend, June 18-20, in Salisbury.

8th-grade basketball
West Rowan’s boys won 60-28 against China Grove to finish the regular season with a 10-4 record.
Jay Joseph led the way for the Bulldogs with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Quay Weeks had 14 points and six steals. Mike Molenda had eight points.
E.J. Clark led China Grove with seven points.
The conference tournament will begin Saturday at North Rowan High.

North Hills hoops
The North Hills middle school girls lost 29-22 to Concordia.
Abigail Zunk scored six points for the Eagles, and Morgan Humble had six points and six rebounds.
In a 31-20 loss to Carolina Christian, Elizabeth Jones had nine points and eight rebounds for North Hills. Humble had 10 rebounds. Bethany Hogan had five rebounds. Zunk had seven rebounds.

In a 45-37 loss to Piedmont Community Charter, Olivia Houghton scored 18 points for the North Hills varsity girls. Brittney Hogan scored eight, and Alyssa Shue scored seven.
In a 45-31 loss to Carolina Christian, Houghton scored nine for the North Hills varsity girls, and Shue scored eight.

The North Hills varsity boys lost 91-85 to Piedmont Community Charter.
Collin Lewis scored 21 points for the Eagles. Dean Gilmore had 20, Colin Turner scored 16, and James Houghton had 14.
In a 79-40 win against Carolina Christian, Turner scored 28 points. Houghton had 19, and Lewis added 15.

Parks and Rec
Salisbury Parks and Recreation is currently accepting registration for a girls basketball league (ages 7-15) and a coed basketball league (ages 5-6).

YMCA hoops
Register now for the high school boys basketball league at the South Rowan YMCA. The league is for grades 9-12 and ages 14-18. Register through Feb. 20.
There’s also a new high school basketball girls league. Register through Feb. 20. Register at the South Rowan Y or online at www.rowanymca.org.
