Area Sports Briefs: Catawba women roll

Catawba’s women’s basketball team outscored Brevard 31-13 in a dominating first quarter on Saturday and rolled to a routine, 70-55, road win.
Catawba (6-8, 3-5) is still only ninth in the South Atlantic Conference standings, but the Indians have won their last two.
Catawba got off to a quick start behind Terri Rogers and Emma Ucinski and led all the way.
Rogers scored 14 points in the first quarter and finished with 26. Ucinski had 12 points and eight rebounds. Jada Huntley scored 10 points.
The Indians outrebounded Brevard 49-28, didn’t miss a free throw (10-for-10), and shot 43.8 percent from the floor.
Shelby Wolfe scored 18 points for the Tornados (1-10, 0-7).
Catawba hosts Wingate at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Prep football
Marshall Long (South Rowan) punted four times in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio on Saturday.
Long averaged 37 yards.
His first punt was 26 yards, but he bounced back for punts of 39, 41 and 42.

Women’s hoops
Richmond’s Karleigh Wike (East Rowan) had 10 points and seven rebounds in a 57-50 loss to Rhode Island on Saturday.

Kennesaw State’s Kelly Dulkoski (Carson) had five assists and six rebounds in Saturday’s 55-54 win against Lipscomb.

Morehead State’s Shay Steele (West Rowan) scored 20 points in Thursday’s 89-79 loss to Southeast Missouri.
Steele had four points and five rebounds in Saturday’s 85-67 loss to UT-Martin.

Salisbury Academy
Salisbury Academy’s varsity boys won 36-32 against Hickory Christian to stay undefeated.
Charlie Barr led the Jaguars with 11 points. Marshall Overcash scored seven.

Madelynn Castor scored 15 for the Jaguars.
The Jaguars play against Concordia at home on Tuesday.

Men’s hoops
In Johnson C. Smith’s 73-71 loss to Chowan on Thursday, Michael Bowman (North Rowan) made a 3-pointer, and Malik Ford (North Rowan) made both his field-goal attempts.
T.J. Bates (North Rowan) also saw action for the Bulls.
