Area Sports Briefs: Concord takes first; key games tonight

Concord won 101-99 against Robinson on Thursday to move past the Bulldogs into first place in the SPC boys standings.
The game was tied 89-all at the end of regulation.

East Rowan’s boys are at South Rowan tonight for a contest that should be interesting. Both teams are 0-8 in the SPC. A team will break through tonight.

Salisbury’s boys are at Lexington, looking to make a statement against a team that they’re 0-4 against the last two seasons.

The key girls game tonight is West Rowan at Hickory Ridge.
Both teams are unbeaten in SPC play.

North Rowan’s teams are at West Davidson and will be looking to extend strong starts.
Carson is at Cox Mill.

The exams break is coming next week, so there will be very few high school sporting events.

8th-grade basketball
West Rowan’s boys defeated Southeast 51-43 on Thursday.
Jay Joseph led the Bulldogs (9-3) with 18 points.
Tykese Warren had 15 points.
Marcellus Washington had 21 points for Southeast.
West Rowan will play Knox on Monday.

Rowan Hurricanes
Rowan Hurricanes AAU basketball will hold tryouts beginning this Saturday at China Grove Middle School.
High school boys (9th-11th) tryouts begin at noon.
Tryouts for girls (6th-7th grade) starts at 2 p.m.

Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart’s varsity boys defeated Park Ridge Christian from Albemarle 55-10.
Blaine Shellhorn scored 24 points.
Nick Antosek scored eight, and Ben Childress added seven.

Sacred Heart’s varsity girls won 27-7 against Park Ridge. Rachel McCullough scored 13 points. Sutton Webb added seven points.

Sacred Heart’s jayvee boys won 21-16 against North Hills.
Finley Church had seven points. Miles Lester had seven rebounds. Riley Dillon had 10 rebounds.

Sacred Heart’s jayvee girls lost 12-8 to North Hills. Faye Carol Shellhorn scored six points.
Sacred Heart hosts varsity home games on Friday, followed by their annual Jack Campbell -Paul Mendez Memorial Event at 6:30 p.m.

Salisbury Academy
Morgan Jeter scored six points in a 16-7 jayvee girls win against Sacred Heart. Camille Palmer had several blocks.

Salisbury Academy’s jayvee boys won 35-15 against Sacred Heart. Josh Portillo scored 13 points. Jack Heilig scored eight, and Wade Robins had six.

College hoops
Tre Williams (Carson) scored 17 points and had seven rebounds for Davidson County Community College in a 100-97 loss to Caldwell CC.
