No excuse for animal abuse
Kudos to Alisa Mullins, writer with the PETA Foundation, for her letter in the Jan. 13 letters to the editor column. She comprehensively expressed the scope of animal cruelty’s effects on humans and animals. Even bigger kudos to Tennessee for being the first state to create an animal cruelty registry.
Anyone who neglects and/or abuses animals, elderly people and children is the lowest of the low and should be subject to the same treatment that they inflicted on their victims. We read about many incidents of animal cruelty and it sickens me to think how someone could succumb to such evil.
Pets are precious and should be given love and care for the ways in which they enhance our lives. The joy, devotion and reciprocal love that animals give us is unequaled.

Here’s what Rowan offers
This is in response to Bethel Gainer’s letter posted Jan. 13: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
This is in response thou r wqeustion… what does Rowan County offer people who are looking for a community? That was a good question. After asking 16 people that very same question, I got this answer 15 times: Nothing.” But I did get one different answer,w which was, “We have an 8 lane highway in almost all of Rowan County, except in the southern end. that’s real good, in case any business in case any business would ever want to come here.”While he was telling that, I was thinking, yeah, and it’s also good for the people trying to get out of Rowan or for the ones just passing through.
But I did come up with a few things that you can’t find just anywhere
If you do snuff, chew tobacco or smoke cig-a-butts, you’re in luck. Rowan County has several parks where this is accepted and welcomed.
Also, they have a lot of two-lane, very narrow roads out in the county. Most of these roads have ditches on both sides, so it’s real easy to stop and throw your trash in the ditch. These narrow roads also have a lot of washouts and potholes. The good news here is Rowan County has lots of front-end shops to put your car back in alignment.
This one’s been talked about before, but it’s worth mentioning again. If you do decide to move there, you don’t need to worry about finding a store to purchase you a new mattress or a lottery ticket or a store to buy a long chain to chain your pit bull dog to a tree. Rowan County has lots of chain stores.
And if you need a place to chain your dog, fly your Rebel flag, or to just sit outside on your couch and cuss at hyour neighbors cats, Rowan County is full of your kind of trailer hoods.

Ditch school uniforms
School uniforms have not been effective in achieving the outcomes they were assumed to do. The violence and behavioral problems have not been reduced.
I have not seen it provide school unity, or improve the learning environment. Social pressure on me has not been reduced, and it has not increased my self esteem or motivation.
School uniforms not only affect the students, but the parents as well. They cost parents more money on clothing for their kids. My attendance and academics have not improved by wearing the uniforms. For the future, rely on research, the students’ voice, and not beliefs. Say no to uniforms!
