Today at approximately 2:16 a.m., officers with the Concord Police Department Traffic Safety Unit responded to a  crash involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle at the intersection of Concord Parkway (US Highway 29) and Kannapolis Highway (US Highway 29A).

A 2013 Freightliner operated by a 25-year-old male was traveling south on Concord Parkway. A 2006 Lincoln Zephyr operated by a 23-year-old male was traveling north on Concord Parkway. As the tractor-trailer was approaching the intersection of Kannapolis Highway, the Lincoln Zephyr made a left turn from Concord Parkway, attempting to merge onto Kannapolis Highway. The tractor-trailer collided with the Lincoln Zephyr. Both vehicles were pushed south of the intersection with the tractor-trailer coming to rest in the parking lot of the Marathon convenience store.

A 21-year-old male passenger of the Lincoln Zephyr sustained life threatening injuries as a result of the crash.  The passenger was transported via ambulance to Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast and then he was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte where he remains in critical condition. There were no passengers in the tractor- trailer truck at the time of the collision.

It does not appear that driver impairment was a factor in this crash; however, the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Anyone with any information relevant to the case is asked to contact Officer M. D. Barnhardt with the Concord Police Department Traffic Safety Unit at 704-920-5033.
