EAST SPENCER — The town board appointed Deputy Fire Chief Marshall Moore to temporarily fill a position left vacant by the departure of Fire Chief Shawn McBride.

McBride, who had been head of the department since March 2012, left at the end of December to spend more time with his wife and children. He is still a full-time firefighter with the city of Salisbury.

Town Administrator David Jaynes said with McBride’s extensive work schedule, he just needed to cut back the hours.

“He would like to come back in the future and he is more than welcome to come back. We wish him the best,” Jaynes said.

For the time being, Moore, who has been in the fire service for over two decades, has been named interim. The town board plans to further discuss finding a permanent replacement at a work session later this month.

“McBride had done a great job with building morale and anytime you bring in someone new you have to make sure the chemistry is right and make sure they are a good match with our department. We want to make sure the camaraderie and the morale of our department stays high,” Jaynes said.

Jaynes said Moore has held similar leadership positions and is qualified to lead the department, but Moore doesn’t wish to assume the head of the fire department permanently.
