Jay Ritchie, 80, a Granite Quarry athlete who made it all the way to the big leagues as a pitcher, died on Tuesday.
A story on the Salisbury-Rowan Hall of Famer will be in Thursday’s edition.

Local golf
Jennifer Chang of Cary and Nick Lyerly of East Rowan have been named the 2015 North Carolina Junior Players of the Year by the Tarheel Youth Golf Association (TYGA) and the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA). The N.C. Junior Player of the Year award recognizes one girl and one boy who had the most successful year in amateur and junior golf events at the local, state, regional and national levels.

Twenty-seven GARS members bundled up and played a Texas Scramble at cold and windy Corbin Hills.
The first team with a minus-7 consisted of Winsten Mahaffey, Bobby Clark, Clive Mahaffey and Buddy Barger.
Two Teams tied for second place with a minus-3. The team of Ross Howard, Ernest Wagner, Dick Hatoway and Harold Caudill won a scorecard playoff for second place.
The third-place team consisted of Phil Cauble, Larry Luther, Ralph Luther and Scott Hay.
Closest to the pin on No. 2 was Winsten Mahaffey.
Longest putt on No. 9 was made by Mick Rowell.

Prep basketball
West Rowan’s girls won 57-43 against Cox Mill on Tuesday.
Taylor Martin led the Falcons (9-2, 7-0 SPC) with 17 points, Egypt Alexander had 13 points, and Mary Sobataka scored nine.
Rachel Barker had 12 to lead the Chargers.

Caleb Mauldin poured in 35 for the Falcons.
Wendell Moore had 23 points and Messiah Baptiste had 20 for the Chargers.

Salisbury splits
Salisbury’s boys won 83-69 against East Davidson in their CCC opener on Tuesday.
DeShawn Troutman surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career.
Will Leckonby made eight 3-pointers in the first half for the Hornets.

Brittany Small had 14 rebounds, while Lauren Weisensel pulled down 12.

Carson drops two
Carson’s girls lost 54-36 to SPC leader Hickory Ridge on Tuesday.
Gabby Smith scored 22 for the Ragin’ Bulls (12-1, 8-0 SPC) and also pulled down 13 rebounds.
Kailie Ketchie led Carson (10-4, 6-2) with 10 points. Anne Marie Turney had eight points, and Olivia Gabriel and McKenzie Gadson had seven apiece.

South drops two
South Rowan fell to Robinson, 48-33, in SPC girls basketball action on Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs improve to 4-7 and 3-4 in the SPC. South falls to 2-12 and 1-7.
South played without leading scorer Janiya Downs and Kamryn Stamey, both of whom are recovering from concussions.
“We struggled to score with Downs and Stamey out, but Riley Corriher did a great job of handling the basketball and finding opening players,” said South coach John Davis.
Davis added that the Raiders were hurt by poor free throw shooting (11-of-33).

Juwan Houston, Zac Ridenhour and Jacob Boyd had pins for the Falcons.
Devin Pina, Hunter Wilhelm, Alex Williams and Lee Poteat won by forfeit.
Alex Arozo won a decision.

Jayvee girls
Carson won 24-14 against Hickory Ridge.
The Cougars (11-0) got eight points from Tayler Harwood and five from Katie Jewell.
Defensive Standouts were Nancy Gamewell, Sarah Musselwhite and Shaleah Jolly.

Jayvee boys
West Rowan won 52-46 against Cox Mill, with Logan Sproul and Josiah Dixon leading the way.

8th-grade basketball
Mooreville won 40-35 against West Rowan.
Both teams are 8-3.
Quay Weeks led the Bulldogs with 15 points, and Jay Joseph added nine.
Malik Birchett led Mooresville with 11 points.
West Rowan will play at Southeast on Thursday.

College hoops
Catawba’s teams play a SAC doubleheader tonight at Queens.

The Pfeiffer women’s basketball team (3-6, 2-3 CC) won 60-49 victory against Converse on Tuesday night. Safia Sheikh scored a game-high 16 points.
