Rowan County Commissioners will triple up on meeting dates this week with one that’s regularly scheduled and two as part of an annual planning retreat.

For the second consecutive year, commissioners will meet for a planning retreat. Prior to 2015, it had been several years since the last such event. This year’s retreat is scheduled for Thursday and Friday. Both meeting days are open to the public and will be held in the Rowan County Administration building, 130 West Innes Street.

Thursday’s meeting starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. Friday’s meeting starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m.

Commissioners aren’t scheduled to specifically discuss particular projects. Last year, for example, commissioners developed a wide-ranging list of goals. Short-terms goals set last year included an emergency services outpost in Rockwell and making policy changes at the Rowan County Animal Shelter. Intermediate-term goals included developing a list of properties certified for economic development and drafting a new contract for all volunteer fire departments. Long-term goals included developing a county-owned water and sewer system and extending the Rowan County Airport Runway.

County leaders have at least started work on most goals set in 2015.

Continuing and planning construction work at West End Plaza, purchased for $3.45 million in 2013 as a solution for limited county office space, is a likely topic during this year’s retreat. Economic development is another likely topic.
