A man shown on surveillance video taking money from a woman inside the Subway at Walmart has returned the cash, police say.

The man, who was never officially charged, was seen Dec. 3 in line behind the 71-year-old woman at Subway. She had $700 in an envelope and placed that envelope on the counter after making a purchase. The man was in line behind her and took the money and left the restaurant.

When she realized she’d left her envelope on the counter she returned to the restaurant and the envelope was gone. After the man’s image was released to the public from video stills, police received numerous phone calls as to his identity.
The man returned to Walmart Dec. 9 and the store’s loss prevention officer recognized him. The officer called police who confronted the man. He confessed to taking the money. Police contacted the victim who said she didn’t want to go through the arrest or court process. The victim said she just wanted her money back.
Police Capt. Shelia Lingle said the man agreed to pay the money back and because he and the victim made a civil agreement, he could not be charged criminally.
The two met at the police department where the man gave the woman her $700 back.
