West Rowan senior defensive back Jaylon “J.T.” Sanders is headed to Daytona Beach, Fla., to participate in the 10th Annual Offense-Defense All-American Bowl.
Recently named to the all-county team, Sanders had three interceptions and scored two touchdowns this season.
Sanders may be the county’s fastest athlete. He swept the 100, 200 and 400 dashes as the Rowan County Track and Field Championships last spring.

Local golf
Ben Byler recently made a hole-in-one with a 7-iron on No. 10 at McCanless.
He was playing from the yellow tees. The hole measured 137 yards.
It was the first ace for Byler. Witnessing the feat was Denny Wenker.

Women’s hoops
Richmond’s Karleigh Wike (East Rowan) had four points and eight rebounds in a 43-33 loss at Wake Forest in her last game before Christmas.

Kennesaw State’s Kelly Dulkoski (Carson) shot 6-for-9 and scored 14 points in a 62-59 loss to Xavier in her last game prior to Christmas.
Dulkoski is shooting 36 percent on 3-pointers this season and averages 9.5 points per game.

After scoring 19 points in her last game before Christmas against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Texas Tech’s Brielle Blaire (North Rowan) will return to action on Wednesday against TCU.

UNC Pembroke’s Avery Locklear (South Rowan) had six rebounds in a 63-51 loss to Georgia College.

Doreen Richardson (Salisbury) had 11 points, four assists and three steals as Fayetteville State won 64-50 against Elizabeth City State in pre-Christmas action.

Men’s hoops
Augusta’s Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) is averaging 26.3 points per game and is tied for third in scoring in Division II.

Catawba baseball
Catawba Baseball will host a First Pitch Dinner on Friday, Jan. 22, at the Peeler Crystal Lounge on the Catawba campus.
Marty Brennaman, longtime radio voice of the Cincinnati Reds, will be a guest speaker at the event.
Brennaman began his career in Salisbury, broadcasting high school football, Catawba football and basketball and Rowan County American Legion baseball games.
He has served as the voice of the Reds since 1974.
The dinner will begin with a cocktail hour from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m with the dinner going from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Catawba professional players — Jerry Sands, Nick Lomascolo, Chris Dula, Paul Kronenfeld and Craig Brooks — are scheduled to be at the event.
