Girls
No. 1 West Rowan (7-0)
Championships: 4
Runner-up: 6
All-time record in Moir: 50-48
Coach: Ashley Poole (3rd year, 24-32)
Top players: All-county senior Khaila Hall is always a threat for a triple-double. All-county guard Taylor Martin is a good 3-point shooter and a relentless defender. Soph Egypt Alexander, a transfer from North Rowan, has given the Falcons the post presence they’ve been missing.
Outlook: The Falcons have come a long way from last season year’s tourney they were a No. 7 seed and went 1-2. West’s schedule hasn’t been tough, but the Falcons did win road games at Carson and East Rowan.

No. 2 Carson (8-2)
Championships: 0
Runner-up: 2
All-time record in Moir: 7-15
Coach: Brooke Misenheimer (10th year, 110-130)
Top players: Sophomore guard Olivia Gabriel averages 12.3 points per game. Long-armed freshman McKenzie Gadson (10.7) has been as good as advertised.
Outlook: Carson won’t overlook first-round opponent Mooresville. The Blue Devils beat the Cougars in the first round last season in a 4-5 matchup. Carson can get to the final by beating Mooresville and the Salisbury-East winner.

No. 3 Salisbury (7-3)
Championships: 10
Runner-up: 2
All-time record in Moir: 42-50
Coach: Lakai Brice (3rd year, 19-39)
Top players: Freshman Bryanna Troutman rebounds, scores and has a big future. Sophomore Maria Capito is a fine shooter. Scorer Tyzarea Alexander missed two games with an ankle injury, but she’s back now.
Outlook: The Hornets were 2-8 and seeded eighth at this point last season, so they’re headed in the right direction.

No. 4 North Rowan (5-4)
Championships: 4
Runner-up: 6
All-time record in Moir: 38-56
Coach: Brian Lytton (4th year, 50-28)
Top players: Senior Aliyah Farmer is playing as well as anyone in the county. Senior Special Washington is having her best season since she was a freshman.
Outlook: The Cavaliers are really quick and they’ve been toughened up by playing on the road against strong 4A teams. Their defense is their best offense. Their shooting is up and down, so teams that can handle their pressure have a chance to beat them.

No. 5 Davie (6-5)
Championships: 6
Runner-up: 4
All-time record in Moir: 53-41
Coach: Dave Ruemenapp (3rd year)
Top players: Ashlyn Hampton, a 6-foot junior committed to Campbell, is a force in the post and averages 17.8 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.2 blocks. Senior guard Madison Zaferatos averages 11.9 points.
Outlook: Davie hasn’t won the girls tournament since 2000 and hasn’t made the final since 2002. Davie could do it this time, but the War Eagles would have to beat North and West just to get to the final.

No. 6 East Rowan (5-5)
Championships: 8 (defending champs)
Runner-up: 13
All-time record in Moir: 73-34
Coach: Danielle Porter (6th year, 75-55)
Top players: Shenell Pharr averages 15.1 points per game, and twin sister Shenique Pharr averages 12.8. Brittany Small averages 10.9 rebounds.
Outlook: East is shooting 33 percent from the field and 16 percent on 3-pointers (17-for-107). The defending champs are shooting a dismal 43 percent on free throws. East still has some good players, but they have to make more layups and more free throws to be a factor in the tournament.

No. 7 Mooresville (3-6)
Championships: 0
Runner-up: 0
All-time record in Moir: 1-2
Coach: Andy Sparks
Top players: Sehrena Hull (7.2 points per game) and Taylor Cullen (6.2) are the leading scorers.
Outlook: Mooresville is only averaging 35.3 points per game and only shooting 33 percent, but it’s been able to hold two opponents in the 20s.

No. 8 South Rowan (2-8)
Championships: 4
Runner-up: 5
All-time record in Moir: 36-54
Coach: John Davis (1st year as girls coach)
Top players: Freshman Janiya Downs is averaging a county-leading 22.1 points per game.
Outlook: South got a surprising win at A.L. Brown recently, so the Raiders are improving. Maybe they can pull out a win in the tournament.
