Area Sports Briefs: Davie boys romp, get No. 3 seed

Davie’s boys won 88-73 at Winston-Salem Atkins in a non-conference basketball game on Monday.
Coach Mike Absher’s War Eagles (7-3) matched their win total for all last season and earned the No. 3 seed for the Dale’s Sporting Goods Sam Moir Christmas Classic (Dec. 28-30 at Catawba).
Heath Slabach enjoyed a phenomenal first half. He had seven 3-pointers and 24 points at the break. He finished with eight 3s and a career-high 30 points.
Cooper Wall scored 19 for the War Eagles, Jordan McDaniel tossed in 15, and Nic Starnes added 11.
Syrus Sadler scored 23 for the Camels (1-7). Reggie Starks tallied 21.
Davie’s boys will play sixth-seeded West Rowan in the 10:30 a.m. game on Dec. 28.
Davie’s fifth-seeded girls will be in the 6 p.m. game against No. 4 seed North Rowan.

Springs to enter Hall
Livingstone AD and golf coach Andre Springs, who was an outstanding golfer at Fayetteville State, will be one of 10 inductees in the newly announced CIAA Hall of Fame class.
Kitchens honored
Catawba sophomore linebacker Kyle Kitchens has been named to the AP Little All-America team.
It’s the third All-America nod for Kitchens.
He’s a finalist for the Cliff Harris Award that goes to the nation’s top D-II defensive player.
Women’s hoops
Morehead State’s Shay Steele (West Rowan) had a huge game on Monday, scoring 24 points and pulling down eight rebounds in a 112-69 romp against Alabama A&M. Steele shot 9-for-10 from the floor and 6-for-6 at the foul line.

Texas Tech’s Brielle Blaire (North Rowan) shot 8-for-10 from the floor and scored 19 points in 17 minutes as the Red Raiders rolled 84-40 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Prep football
South Rowan punter Marshall Long was honored with a spot on the NCPreps.com All-State team.
Long averaged a county-record 46.5 yards per punt this season.
He’ll play in the Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio on Jan. 9.
Prep girls hoops
Hickory Ridge’s girls lost for the first time this season, dropping a fast-paced 86-82 tournament decision against 4A Vance.
Gabby Smith had 25 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulls (9-1). Sydney Miller scored 16. Stacia Means added 14.
Local golf
The McCanless Couples played a Texas Scramble on Sunday. The team of Azalee Story, Mary Seaford, Beverly Cobb and Harry Owens took first place.
Phyllis Myers, Susan Houston, David Huneycutt and Terrol Kendall placed second. Kendall won closest to the pin. Story won longest putt.
