Area Sports Briefs: Hargrave repeats as HBCU Defensive Player of the Year

Former North Rowan standout Javon Hargrave, a South Carolina State defensive lineman, was named the BOXTOROW Defensive Player of the Year for the second season in a row.
The 6-2, 295-pound Hargrave had another dominate season despite double and triple teams. His 13.5 sacks led the MEAC and was second in FCS.
He alsoregistered 22 tackles for loss and 59 tackles (46 solo).
Hargrave was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Year and to the first teamSTATS All-America Team.
All-MECKA
A.L. Brown’s Jayln Cagle was named MECKA Special Teams Player of the Year.
Vance receiver Myles Dorn is the MECKA Offensive Player of the Year.
Hough DB Marquill Osborne is the MECKA Defensive Player of the Year.
Hough’s Miles Aldridge is the MECKA Coach of the Year.
A.L. Brown’s other All-MECKA players are quarterback Damon Johnson, running back Sandon McCoy, offensive lineman Cameron Peters, defensive linemen Dantrell Barkley and Eligah Hall, linebackers Cameron Rodgers and Steven Howie, and defensive backs Cincere Allison and Kasiem Black.

Prep football
The U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Committee announced eight nominees for the prestigious Felix “Doc” Blanchard and Glenn Davis Awards.
The awards will be announced at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Awards Show on Jan. 8, 2016, in San Antonio. South Rowan punter Marshall Long is a nominee for the Doc Blanchard Award.
Davie rallies
MOCKSVILLE – Davie County, down by as many as 16 points, rallied to defeat Reagan, 66-65, Tuesday night in a Central Piedmont Conference game.
Davie (6-2, 1-1 CPC) used a 22-8 third-quarter advantage to go up, 50-48, and set up a back-and-forth final period.
Down, 65-64, with nine seconds left, Davie guard Nic Starnes hit Jordan McDaniel with a back-door pass for the game-deciding layup. Reagan had two seconds to attempt a shot, but its halfcourt try fell short.
McDaniel led the War Eagles with 17 points, while Heath Slabach and Cooper Wall scored 12 each. Starnes added 10 points.
Reagan (3-4, 0-2) was led by J. McClurney’s 27 points and J.C. Culbreath’s 15.

South falls to Vikings
LANDIS – Central Cabarrus swept a South Piedmont Conference doubleheader at South Rowan on Tuesday night.
The Vikings won the boys game, 55-49, behind 16 points from Kyran McClure. Isaiah Salter added 13 points. South was led by Ian Bradshaw’s 17 points and nine each from Jaqwon Hester and Tyrese Shaver.
The Raiders (0-8, 0-6 SPC) led at halftime, 21-20, but Central (4-4, 2-4) outscored South, 18-9, in the third quarter to take command.
In the girls game, 18 points from Janiya Downs and 12 points from Riley Corriher was not enough for South (1-6, 1-5 SPC) to beat Central (4-5, 3-3).
The Vikings were led by Mahaley Holit with 16 points, Justice Wallace with 15, 12 from Brooke Breedlove and 11 from Jania Ikard.

Henderson Lentz’s comeback continues. He returned to the floor for the first time this season and made a 3-pointer in North Rowan’s 73-50 win against Charlotte’s Crossroads Charter.

ALBANY, Ga. — Livingstone’s men defeated Albany State, 66-57, Tuesday night.
No other details were available at press time.
Livingstone is 2-5 overall and plays again today, at Fort Valley State at 5:30.
Pfeiffer losses
Pfeiffer lost 81-75 to Bluefield on Tuesday.
Andrew Guerrero scored 22 points for the Falcons.
Jayvee girls
Carson’s girls won 17-11 against Concord.
Shaleah Jolly and Montana Gurganious scored four points each for the Cougars (8-0).
North Hills girls
The North Hills girls won 20-12 against Comenius. Elizabeth Jones had six points and 10 rebounds. Abigail Zunk had six points.
