Area Sports Briefs: Salisbury girls rally, improve to 7-2

Salisbury’s girls baskeball team wiped out a late, seven-point deficit and beat Albemarle 59-55 at home on Monday.
“We played with a lot of heart,” Salisbury coach Lakai Brice said. “That’s how we pulled it out.”
The Hornets trailed 50-43 late but closed with a rush.
A three-point play by Mariah Glenn pulled the Hornets (7-2) within 50-47. After the Bulldogs answered, a stickback by Tacorra Robinson trimmed Albemarle’s lead to 52-49 with 1:08 remaining.
With Salisbury down 53-49, Maria Capito hit a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left, and the Hornets were within a single point.
Capito then got a steal on the press, and Robinson scored inside to put Salisbury ahead to stay at 54-53.
Kyleigh McLendon scored 21 for the Bulldogs.
Tacorra Robinson had 18 for the Hornets, while Capito scored 14. Capito had eight in the fourth quarter.

Prep football
North Rowan junior defensive end Zion DeBose has been invited to participate in the U.S. Army All American Combine from Jan. 7-9 in San Antonio.
The junior was the CCC Defensive Player of the Year this season with stats that included four forced fumbles, 4.5 sacks, 33 tackles for loss and 33 QB hurries.
8th-grade hoops
West Rowan’s girls beat Erwin 50-36. Taylor Poole scored 17 for the Bulldogs, and Cindy Connelly had 15.
Adalie Harrison had 15 to lead the Eagles, and Jayle Usher had 11.

West Rowan’s boys won 38-29 against Erwin.
Jalen Houston had seven points for the Bulldogs (7-2), while Quay Weeks, Jay Joseph and KJ Hernandez had six each.
Erwin is 4-5. West hosts Corriher-Lipe on Thursday.

Defense keyed a 27-20 win by the China Grove girls against Knox. Leading scorers for the Red Devils were Madison Henry with 11 points and Whitley Arnott with 10.

Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart’s varsity boys won 45-39 against St. Leo Catholic of Winston Salem. Blaine Shellhorn led the Dolphins with 26 points. Sean Archer had eight, and Juan Salazar had six.

Hurricanes tryouts
AAU basketball tryouts for the Rowan Hurricanes 6th-grade girls will be held on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 3401 Mooresville Road.
