Area Sports Briefs: East girls get fourth win

East Rowan’s girls won 57-41 at Mount Pleasant on Wednesday in a non-conference game.
“We bounced back pretty well from losing (to undefeated) Hickory Ridge on Tuesday,” East coach Danielle Porter said. “We were focused and we got back to do doing what we do.”
Shenell Pharr scored 19 for the Mustangs (4-3), while Shenique Pharr had 15.
East jumped out to a 21-6 lead after a quarter.
“We got our transition game going and we got some easy baskets,” Porter said.
Lauren Weisensel had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Jocelyn Lowe had 10 rebounds and five assists. Brittany Small blocked five shots and grabbed eight rebounds.
“Rebounding has been a strength all year,” Porter said. “We just need to get better in a lot of areas, and this was a positive step.”
Shelby Fisher scored 10 points for the Tigers.

East Rowan’s boys lost 68-66 at Mount Pleasant.
East is playing without Naquis Caldwell and Paiton File, both injured, and lost Austin Love and Bravon Goodlett to fouls in the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s game.
Bravin Goodlett scored 16 points to lead the Mustangs, while Love had 15. Lucas Morton (12) and Logan Shuping (10) also were in double figures.
Freshman Brevin Goodlett had eight. Ellis Taylor and Trevor Scruggs, a recent jayvee callup, also scored for the Mustangs.
“We’ve been struggling to get out of the 40s, but we did a better job sharing the ball tonight,” East coach Kurt Misenheimer said. “It was a tough loss. We just didn’t get some rebounds we needed and they got some second-chance points late. But there were a lot of positives we can take from it.”
The Tigers are 2-5, while the Mustangs are 1-6.
Prep Football
The All-SPC football team was announced.
South Rowan punter Marshall Long was honored as the league’s top/punter kicker.
Concord quarterback Keenan Black was honored as offensive player of the year, while Concord defensive lineman Mike Baker was named defensive player of the year.
Robinson’s Michael Young and Concord’s Carter Mozingo shared special teams player of the year honors.
West Rowan’s All-SPC players are quarterback Kacey Otto, receivers Juwan Houston and Kortez Weeks, defensive linemen Dearius Phillips and Devin Turner, linebacker L.J. Robinson and DB Deyquan Byrd.
South Rowan’s All-SPC players are Long and kicker Brennan Lambert.
Carson’s All-SPC players are receiver Brandon Huneycutt, linebackers Ryan Bearden and Jacob McCurry and running back Dylan Livengood.
East Rowan’s All-SPC players are DB Wesley Porter and receiver Naquis Caldwell.

North Hills varsity soccer and volleybal teams competed in the National Christian School Athletic Association tournaments.
Both won championships.
Colin Lewis and Collin Turner made the soccer all-tournament team. Dajah Glenn and Sieria Eagle were named to the all-tournament volleyball team.
Hurley Warriors
The Hurley YMCA Warriors team placed second out of six teams, ages 9-10, in the AAU Cross Country Nationals held in Alabama.
The 9-10 team consists of Eli Julian, Triston Rabon, Connor Price, Jake Swicegood and Grayson Steedley.
Competing in the 9-10 race, Rabon finished 12th overall and was the top 9-year-old runner. He ran 11:12.9 in the 3K event.
Connor Price finished 21st in the race and was seventh among 9-year-olds in 11:40.7. Julian, 10, finished ninth in 11:04.4. Swicegood, 10, was 27th overall in 11:47. Steedley, 9, ran 12:49.1. He was 71st overall and 24th among 9-year-olds.
Winning the championship was the Derby Athletic Club of Louisville, Ky, with a score of 47. The Hurley Y’s score was 54.
8th-grade hoops
West Rowan 37-36 in overtime against North Rowan.
Quay Weeks and Jay Joseph had 10 points each for West (6-1). Tykese Warren added nine points. Jalen Houston had 12 steals.
Chaz McCombs had 15 points for North.
Local golf
Fifty-four GARS members played a Captain’s Choice at Corbin Hills.
The first-place team with a minus-10 consisted of O.J. Chandler, Ed Lockhart, Everette Hancock and Clyde Crawford.
The second-place team with a minus-9 consisted of Gorden Correll, Paul Dombrowski, Dick Hatoway and Scott Hay.
The third-place teams with minus-8s consisted of Phil Cauble, David Scearce, Larry Luther and Larry Perrell; Johnny
Shook, Bob Niekras, Norman Schenk, and John Daniels; Tony LaBarbera, Bert Bollinger, Dale Cobb, and Bob Sidden.
Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart’s jayvee girls won 10-4 against Hickory Christian. Gianna Patella led with four points.
Sacred Heart’s jayvee boys lost 41-19 to Hickory Christian.
Finley Church had six points and six rebounds. Deuce Walker scored five.

Sacred Heart’s varsity girls won 25-9 against Hickory Christian. Rachel McCullough led the Dolphins with 16 points. Hannah Smith had five.
Sacred Heart’s varsity boys fell to Hickory Christian 45-20. Juan Salazar scored six points. Blaine Shellhorn had five.
College football
South Carolina State defensive lineman Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) and North Carolina A&T offensive lineman Brandon Parker (A.L. Brown) were named to the BOXTOROW All-America team for HBCU football.
Livingstone’s Drew Powell was Honorable Mention.
Lady Flames
The Rowan Lady Flames are looking for girls basketball players in grades 5-8 that are interested in playing in the travel spring season.

North Hills hoops
North Hills Christian defeated Carolina Christian, 54-38, in Locust on Tuesday.
North Hills (4-1) was led once again by Micah Chamber with 22 points. Chase Davis added 14 points.
Josh Hazlet scored 18 points for Carolina Christian.
College volleyball
Catawba’s Bri Howard has been named to the College Division All-State volleyball team by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA). The team was announced on Wednesday.
College basketball
Davidson County Community College’s Tre Williams (Carson) had 12 points and six assists, while David Tripp (A.L. Brown) had eight points and seven rebounds in a 120-84 win against Elite Skills Basketball Academy.
Prep basketball
West Rowan and Davie did not play a varsity girls game on Wednesday.
That game was postponed to Jan. 6 at 6 p.m. at West.

Scott Hughes scored 20 points and Carson Beane had 14 as West Davidson’s boys won 54-38 against South Davidson on Wednesday.

Tyrese Lawrence scored 13 points for West Rowan’s boys in a 46-39 win against Davie County on Wednesday.
NCHSAA
Kaleb Barfield and Jordon Brown of Southern Durham High School are winners of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards.
The unusual award is based on the outstanding but differing performances the two Spartan football standouts had in leading Southern Durham to a 19-15 victory on the road against perennial power Northern Guilford to advance to the 3-AA state championship game.
Barfield picked off three passes to stop Nighthawk drives and also had a pass reception for a 44-yard touchdown. Brown, shifted to quarterback due to injury to starter Jalen Green and had a terrific game. He rushed for 174 yards and a score and completed seven of 15 passes for 139 yards and another TD.
