Area Sports Briefs: North, Salisbury win on road vs. 4A squads

North Rowan’s boys stayed undefeated with a 66-61 win at Ardrey Kell on Thursday.
Jalen Sanders scored 31 points for the Cavaliers. Joseph Scott had 14, and Josh Handy had 10.
Sanders hit free throws at the end to seal the victory.
“There was a lot of noise, with a very involved crowd, and I think their gym area is as big as our whole school,” North coach Andrew Mitchell said. “It’s a great win for us because we could’ve cracked up under the pressure. They’ve still got a lot of very good players and they’ve got a great offensive system.”
Mitchell gave credit to Handy, Scott, Alonzo Sirleaf and A.J. Shields for holding their own on the boards against a bigger team.
Ardrey Kell (1-4) was 4A state runner-up last season.
Wes Morgan scored 22 points for the Knights.
The Cavaliers are 4-0.

Salisbury got a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Isaac Baker and won 62-59 at 4A Lake Norman on Thursday.
“We did some good things with our press and some good things running our break,” Salisbury coach Bryan Withers said.
“We’re starting to make plays for each other, starting to buy in to looking for each other, and that’s great to see. This was a great win for us.”
Lake Norman had a 6-foot-10 player in the middle who was a presence, but the Hornets pulled the game out.
Salisbury held the ball the final minute and set up the winning shot, DeShawn Troutman drove and kicked to Baker, who made the game-winner.
Troutman scored 15, Baker had 13, and Tre Oats scored 10 for the Hornets.
The Hornets are 4-0. Lake Norman is 0-4.
Salisbury is at Albemarle tonight for its fourth game in seven days.
“We’re playing an NBA schedule with high school kids,” Withers said.

Competing without its football players, Concord rolled 89-62 at East Rowan in SPC action on Thursday.
Alon Parker scored 27 points for the Spiders. Rechon Black, one of the state’s top sophomores, had 15 assists. Ray Kowalski scored 18 points.
The game was moved to Thursday due to Concord’s 3AA state semifinal football game with Crest tonight.

East played without Naquis Caldwell, who is expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks with an injury. Caldwell suffered a knee injury (MCL) in in Tuesday’s game with Carson.

Girls basketball
North Rowan’s girls lost 65-46 to Ardrey Kell in Charlotte on Thursday.
“We did some good things,” North coach Brian Lytton said. “But when you play good teams, it exposes your weaknesses. This was good for us. We saw some things we need to work on.”
Aliyah Farmer, averaging a double-double, scored 18 points for the Cavaliers.
Special Washington added 10 points.
Brianna White, also averaging a double-double, saw limited action with a hamstring injury and didn’t play in the second half.
Chase Muhammad, daughter of former Carolina Panthers receiver, Muhsin, had 21 points to lead Ardrey Kell.
North Rowan is 3-1. Ardrey Kell is 4-2.

Prep wrestling
West Rowan’s wrestlers improved to 4-0 with wins against East Rowan and South Iredell on Thursday.
In a 51-24 win over the Mustangs, Zac Ridenhour (145), Jacob Boyd (160), Tyler Nichols (182), Lee Poteat (195) and Garrett Kennedy (220) racked up pins for the Falcons.
Hunter Wilhelm (126), Juwan Houston (138) and Alex Williams (152) won by decision.
Devon Pena (106) and A.J. Martlock (113) won by forfeit.
Landon Carico (120), Wesley Porter (132) and Max Wall (170) had pins for the Mustangs.
Austin Hoosier won on a DQ.

North Hills hoops
The North Hill middle school boys rolled 66-30 against Sacred Heart on Thursday.
Micah Chambers scored a season-high 34 for the Eagles. Chase Davidson had 17 points.
8th-grade hoops
Knox beat West Rowan 72-36.
Reggie Everhart led Knox with 18 points, and Xavier Kesler had 13 points.
Jay Joseph led West with 11 points.
West will play next against China Grove.
College hoops
Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) scored 20 points for Augusta in Thursday’s 91-81 loss to Bowie State.
College soccer
Catawba’s Kenny Bonilla (Salisbury) was named to the All-Southeast Region third team.
Bonilla finished his senior year with seven goals. and a pair of assists.
