The East Rowan Class of 1960 celebrates 55 years

The East Rowan Class of 1960 celebrated their 55th reunion Oct. 17, 2015, at Morgan Ridge Vineyards and Brewhouse on John Morgan Road in Gold Hill. A total of 43 members were present. Dennis Sellers, president, led in a silent prayer for the deceased members, and a table was set up with pictures and a burning candle provided by Faye Porter. Everyone enjoyed a social hour with hors d’oeuvres and a catered meal by Morgan Ridge with Jason Nain as chef. Tables were decorated with block mirrors and bud vases with red carnations (which were donated by Carolyn Sides) and a mustang. One member from each table won the centerpiece. Door prizes were donated by Carolyn Sides and Jane McMichael. A quilt that was quilted by Shelby Josey, now deceased, was donated by her husband, Carl Josey, and was won by Hazelene Poteat.

Guests were Rae Huneycutt, Betty Bell, and Joe Piatt. Members came from as far away as South Carolina and Virginia. The reunion was enjoyed by all and Judy Hoffner was elected president for the next class reunion. The planning committee was: Dennis Sellers, Brenda Alexander, Joe Jones, Tex Lyerly, Ralph Walton, Harold Snider, Faye Porter, Carolyn Sides, Mickey Wilhelm, Bud Moose and Judy Hoffner.

 WRHS alum wins new car

GASTON COUNTY — Julie Shatterly, WRHS Class of 1988, has won a new car from Kia of Gastonia. Shatterly is a school media specialist at W.A. Bess Elementary School. Employees from each school in the district were nominated by their peers and entered into a raffle. While all of the educators were  recognzed for their school, only one could drive off with the brand new car. Her name was announced at the Outstanding Educator Awards ceremony 0n Nov. 18. Shatterly said the new vehicle will help her cart around all the books she’s needed for this year’s school book fair.

Third annual Eloganze Cabaret

The Ladies of Eloganze Social Club are sponsoring a fashion show and dance at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12 with music by deejay Majik Mike. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. An evenging of fashions, food, fun anddoor prizes. Held at Harold B. Jarrett Post 342, 1024 Lincolnton Road. For tickets call 704-310-8888.

Livengood-Peeler-Wood Auxiliary

The Livengood-Peeler-Wood Auxiliary met for its monthly meeting on Nov. 17 at the Granite Quarry Legion Building. A fundraiser dinner was served followed by the business meeting. A visit to the VA Medical Center was planned for Nov. 19 to visit residents and play bingo. Food and snacks were distributed to the teachers and workers at Granite Quarry Elementary school on Nov. 23 in recognition of education month. A program on events and facts of WWI was presented to the 12 members present.

The Rowan Redbuds 

The Rowan Redbuds Garden Club met Thursday, Nov. 19, at the Rowan Public Library. President Kim Fahs presided. Pat Wayne from the Salisbury Flower Shop gave a program on Holiday Decorations. If you are interested in visiting the Rowan Redbuds Garden Club, call 704-754-8905.
