Area Sports Briefs: Catawba men fall at Lenoir-Rhyne

Lenoir-Rhyne built a 16-point lead early in the second half and held off Catawba’s men’s basketball team 92-83 on Saturday in Hickory.
The Bears (3-0, 1-0) won the SAC opener for both teams behind Old Dominion transfer Keenan Palmore, who posted a triple-double with 29 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists.
Will Perry scored 18 for the Bears. Reed Lucas had 16, and Rob Noyes had 14.
Catawba (0-3, 0-1) got a double-double from Jameel Taylor, who had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Jerrin Morrison picked up 14 points, and Rakeen Brown scored 11. Freshman Malik Constantine just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
The Bears led 29-13 early and by 52-40 at halftime.
Catawba shot 48.5 percent and held a 46-35 edge on the boards.
LR went 28-for-48 at the foul line, while the Indians were 12-for-17.

The trio of Mike Smith, AJ Clark and Andrew Guerrero accounted for 61 points for Pfeiffer.

Women’s hoops
Catawba’s women’s basketball team lost 72-61 at North Georgia on Saturday.
Jordan Livesay scored 17 for undefeated North Georgia (4-0).
Bri Johnson scored 15 for Catawba (2-3). Terri Rogers added 12.
Catawba shot 30.9 percent.
Catawba opens SAC action on Tuesday against Coker at Goodman Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
