MURDOCK Study to host appreciation event Saturday

KANNAPOLIS — As a thank you to nearly 12,000 people who have enrolled in the MURDOCK Study, Duke University will host a free community celebration on Saturday, Oct. 31 at the NC Research Campus. The second annual event will include the MURDOCK Mile, a new 1-mile fun run/walk, starting at 9 a.m. in front of the Core Laboratory Building at 150 Research Campus Drive, and other activities including health screenings, yoga, Zumba, line dancing and face painting will continue until noon. The event is open to the community, and people are encouraged to come dressed in costume. The best costumes will win prizes. A deejay on the main stage will entertain the crowd. As part of the celebration, MURDOCK Study participants and their friends and family can tour Duke University’s new office in the NCRC Medical Plaza, located at 201 Dale Earnhardt Blvd., Ste. 300, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Shana Tucker – from Cirque Du Soleil to the Davis Theatre

CONCORD —  Not only has Shana Tucker given her unique genre its own name, “ChamberSoul,” but she has even trademarked it. A singer, songwriter and cellist, she credits the development of ChamberSoul to her jazz and classical roots blended with 1980s and 1990s pop music, movie sound tracks and world music. Tucker’s style and sound as been described as a mash-up of Dianne Reeves, Joni Mitchell, and Tracy Chapman, with an efficient complexity that is reminiscent of Bill Withers. Tucker will be joined by three other musicians for an evening of ChamberSoul, cello and songs Saturday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m. at the Davis Theatre, 65 Union St. S.  Tickets are $34  at www.CabarrusArtsCouncil.org

2015 Cotton Ketchie Award 

Mooresville artist Cotton Ketchie selected  Ashville artist Ann Vasilik’s painting “Oh, to be back in Beynac” for the Cotton Ketchie Award at the Watercolor Society of North Carolina’s 70th juried exhibit. The exhibit can be seen at Mooresville Arts Depot in historic downtown Mooresville. The exhibit of 70 juried paintings by North Carolina artists will be on display until Nov. 25. Admission is free.
