Bargain Reminders

Several times lately I’ve overheard discussions on how and when to use our bargain Michael’s and 2NT overcall bids. The Unusual 2NT overcall can be used with any number of points and it is as follows: RHO bids a major suit and you have 2 five card minor suits bid 2NT. RHO bids 1 Club or 1 Diamond and you have 5 of the other 2 lowest unbid suits bid 2NT. The unusual 2NT bid never shows a 5 card Spade suit.

The Michaels convention on the other hand is usually used with less than 11 points and is as follows: RHO bids a major suit and you raise that suit 1 level you are saying you have 5 cards in the other major and an unknown minor. If RHO bids 1 of a minor suit and you raise that suit 1 level you are saying you have 5 cards in both major suits. Think things through and pick wisely. Your proper bid may be neither bargain bid.
