Since 1986, Terri Correll has devoted her time to a special hobby – building miniature dollhouses and furniture.

“My mother always said I liked little things,” Correll said.

For her birthday, she got a dollhouse which inspired her to start building and selling her own miniatures to fund her hobby. Since then, with a degree in drafting and design from Rowan Technical Institute and as a member of the Mini Reflections club, she has been helping others interested in her hobby build their own miniatures as well as hosting group workshops providing education and fellowship.

In recognition of National Dollhouse and Miniatures month, Mini Reflections will host a workshop Oct. 24 at the Spencer Doll and Toy Museum led by Correll. Participants will have the opportunity to build their own half-scale dollhouse and furnish it with their own accessories. The kit provided includes the laser cut materials to build the house which Correll designed.

“It’s important for the Spencer Doll and Toy Museum to host this miniature workshop in order to perpetuate imagination and play,” museum founder Beth Nance said. “Miniatures are a hobby and craft that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and income. Imagination is the only key component needed.”

Participants will need to bring the following materials: stain (for floors), paint (exterior, interior walls and trim), brushes, wood glue or tacky glue, ruler, pencil, sand paper and scissors, as well as a bagged lunch.

“There may not be enough time to completely finish the kit, but I will be available for assistance afterwards if needed,” Correll said.

Ten spots are available for the workshop, and those interested can call the museum at 704-762-9359 before Oct. 20. The cost is $47.
