No one was injured Tuesday when an airplane landed short of the Rowan County Airport runway and damaged four light poles, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred late Monday night or early Tuesday morning, according to the Sheriff’s Office. A pilot and two passengers were aboard the single-engine, fixed-wing aircraft.

The pilot told emergency personnel he switched fuel tanks just prior to landing and lost power, according to Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Capt. John Sifford. The pilot subsequently lost control of the aircraft and made a hard landing about 500 feet short of the runway, Sifford said.

Four light towers were damaged as a result of the landing. There was no estimate immediately available about how much the light towers would cost to replace.

Emergency personnel notified the Federal Aviation Administration after the incident, Sifford said. He said the FAA requested airport staff and emergency responders leave the plane where it landed.

Sifford said it didn’t appear the pilot had any trouble until he attempted to switch fuel tanks.

The airport can reopen and continue operations, Sifford said.
