Area Sports Briefs: Hornets win CCC — again

Salisbury honored seniors Kayla Honeycutt, Kathryn Rusher, Grace Steinman and Emily Capito, and then beat North Rowan 9-0 to complete yet another perfect season in CCC tennis.
Salisbury’s girls have won 13 straight CCC titles and 17 of the last 18.
Salisbury begins post- season play on Monday, Oct. 12 and 13, and will host the CCC tournament.

Prep volleyball
Salisbury swept Lexington on Tuesday in CCC action. Juliana Anderson led the team with 15 kills. Makayla Dillon had three kills and nine assists. Lora Withers had three aces and 15 assists.

Salisbury’s jayvees won 2-1 against Lexington.
Abigail Lund, Ariyan Duren Williams and Kaya Twitty had seven aces each. Williams had five kills and Twitty added four. Abigail Lund led the defense with six digs.

In SPC play on Wednesday, Carson won 3-1 against Concord, South Rowan won 3-0 against Northwest Cabarrus, and East Rowan topped West Rowan 3-1.

Local golf
Shelley McGeorge made a hole-in-one on No. 12 at Warrior Golf Club on Wednesday. She used a 4-hybrid to ace the 133-yard hole. Witnessing the feat were Mary Hladik and Sally Whitney.

Thirty-five GARS members played a Captain’s Choice at Corbin Hills.
The first-place team with a minus-12 consisted of Phil Cauble, David Scearce, Jan Kichefski and John Cress.
The second-place team with a minus-11 consisted of Tim Messinger, Paul Dombrowski, Ray Pope and Gorden Correll.
The third-place team with a minus-7 consisted of Doug Lingle, Ernest Wagner, Bobby Bryant and Ross Howard.
Closest to the pin on No. 2 was Andy Griffin. Longest putt on No. 9 was made by David Scearce.

College soccer
Catawba’s women (3-7) lost 1-0 in overtime to Queens on Wednesday at Frock Field.
Angelica Pawlowski stopped eight shots for the Indians.

College tennis
Catawba (1-3) lost to Pfeiffer 7-2 in men’s tennis on Tuesday.

College basketball
Catawba men’s basketball coach Rob Perron announced the hire of Jo Jo English as an assistant coach.
English comes to Catawba after serving as head coach at South Carolina’s Sumter High the past two seasons.
English guided Sumter to its first state title in 30 years last season and was named the USA Today South Carolina Coach of the Year.
In his first season, he took Sumter to the Lower State finals and was the Region 6 Coach of the Year.
“After my visit to Catawba and spending time with the student athletes, I felt in my spirt that I was among family,” English said.
English played a decade of pro ball after playing college ball at South Carolina.

8th-grade football
Knox won 36-20 against Erwin.
The score was 20-all at halftime.
Jabril Norman accounted for all five touchdowns for the Trojans (3-1), who put together a complete effort on offense, defense and special teams.

West Rowan won 54-6 against China Grove (2-3).
Jalen Houston scored four touchdowns on runs of 57, 54, 48 and 38 yards for the Bulldogs (5-0).
Houston and Steven Wilmont recovered two fumbles each.
Gerquavius Weeks scored on a 45-yard run. Dylan Sigmon scored on a 60-yard run. Riley Leavenworth had a 5-yard touchdown run. Federico Cruz was 6-for-7 on 2-point conversion kicks.
Carter Jenkins, Colton Evans, Jonny Hassard, Drake Martin, Edwin Berrios, Daniel Sell and J.T. Bost blocked well.
The West defense was lead by Calub Pope, Jay Joseph, Chris Moore, Mike Molenda, Bryson Coleman, Weeks and Baiden Suddarth.
West Rowan plays at Erwin next Wednesday.

Mid. school tennis
Erwin defeated Southeast in girls tennis.
It was the seventh win for the Eagles.
Winners in singles for Erwin were Jenna Robinson, Carliegh Perry and Colbie Perry. Winners in doubles were Colbie Perry, Madison Brown, Syann Cooper, and Carliegh Perry.

Mid. school softball
Tori Hester struck out 11 batters and Diana Taylor made a great catch in West Rowan’s 4-3 win against Erwin.
Taylor made a running catch in left field and doubled a runner off first to get two outs in the seventh.
Ally Young and Hester had two hits each for the Bulldogs.

7th-grade football
West Rowan won 6-0 against China Grove.
Ashton Matthews scored the only touchdown. Rushing leaders were Seth Simmerson and Grayson Phillips.
Defensive standouts for the Bulldogs included Nathaniel Estrada, Gavin Burleson, Bradlee Bean, Ikeem Hart, Damon Phillipe (interception), James Ball, Alejandro Corbera and Garrett Nance.
