Lockdown at Granite Quarry Elementary

Granite Quarry Elementary School was placed on a Code Orange lockdown Tuesday afternoon while Granite Quarry Police made an arrest in the area.
Rowan-Salisbury Schools System Public Information Officer Rita Foil said most elementary schools in Rowan County operate on a Code Yellow lockdown, meaning that all outside doors are locked and visitors must be buzzed in. A Code Orange indicates to students and teachers that while they should continue classes as normal, they need to remain where they are and lock classroom doors.
“It’s more of a heightened alert,” Foil said.
Parents were notified when the lockdown went into effect around 1 p.m., Foil said. Granite Quarry Elementary continued to operate as usual under the lockdown and dismissal occurred as scheduled. All students left the school without incident, Foil said.
The Granite Quarry Police Department could not be reached for comment.
