Area Sports Briefs: Carson soccer faces big test

Carson’s boys soccer team plays at Marvin Ridge at 6 p. tonight in a match that will give the undefeated Cougars an idea how they stack up in the region.
Carson (8-0) is ranked 12th in 3A. Marvin Ridge (6-0-4) is ranked fourth.

Jayvee football
Some jayvee football games that were postponed from Thursday are scheduled for tonight, including West Stokes at North Rowan and Carson at Robinson.
Due to field issues, the Carson-Robinson game will be played at Central Cabarrus.
West Rowan’s jayvees won 41-0 against South Rowan last week for the Falcons’ first victory.

Middle school golf
In the North Carolina Junior Middle School Golf Tournament in Badin, Salisbury Academy’s Charlie Barr shot 73-81 — 154 and tied for 17th.
Salisbury Academy’s Mitch Jeter shot 80-77 — 157 and was 22nd.
Other scores:
Will Fowler, Salisbury Academy, 78-84 — 162, tied for 31st. Ben Childress, Sacred Heart, 90-83 — 173, tied for 43rd. Hank Robins, Salisbury Academy, 86-87 — 173, tied for 43rd.
Seventy-two golfers competed.

Catawba athletics
Catawba swept visiting Mars Hill 25-22, 25-17 and 25-21 at Goodman Gym on Saturday.
Erin Morant had six blocks for Catawba (7-7, 4-3 SAC). Morant and McKenzie Garrison had eight kills each.

Catawba’s men’s soccer team won 3-1 at Coker on Saturday.
Ian Orr, Declan Stimson and Brian Woulfe scored for Catawba (3-4, 2-2) SAC.
Kenny Bonilla (Salisbury) had an assist.

Catawba’s women’s soccer team lost 1-0 in overtime at Coker on Saturday.
Angelica Pawlowski made five saves for Catawba (3-4, 2-2 SAC).

Catawba’s men’s cross country team competed in the Bulldog Stampede at Wingate on Saturday.
Freshman Curtis Carmack finished 37th with a time of 27:43 and led Catawba to a top-10 finish.
Catawba’s women were 13th. Abbie Adams led the Indians. She was 22nd in 24:09 in a 6K race.

The Catawba women’s golf team participated in the Lander Lady Bearcat Invitational.
Victoria Hedrick (Lexington, N.C./C. Davidson HS) led the way for Catawba with a two-round total of 165 to finish 66th.

Local golf
The McCanless couples played Captain’s Choice on Sunday.
The first-place team was John King, Phyllis Myers and Gene & Mary Seaford.
Finishing second was the team of Azalee Story, Tim Earnhardt, Allen Drew and David Huneycutt
Seaford won closest to the pin. Huneycutt won longest putt.

Sacred Heart
Sacred Heart’s varsity soccer team won 6-2 against Concordia.
Juan Salazar scored five goals for the Dolphins (7-1). Colin Donaldson scored a goal. Sutton Webb and Cameron Pierson were outstanding for the Dolphins.

Sacred Heart’s varsity volleyball team lost 25-21 and 25-18 to Concord.
Theresa Holland, Caroline Clark and Hannah Smith led the Dolphins.

Sacred Heart’s jayvee volleyball team lost to Concordia 24-26, 25-12 and 15-4. Faye Carol Shellhorn served 8 points in a row.

Sacred Heart’s girls tennis team lost to Salisbury Academy 6-3. The Dolphins swept doubles.

Sacred Heart and Salisbury Academy hosted a cross country meet.
Sacred Heart boy’s team finished second, and Salazar was the individual winner. Jake Denhard finished fourth.
Salisbury Academy won the boys competition. SA’s Will Fowler finished third.
Sacred Heart’s girls finished second. Spencer Hansen finished third, Angie Landaverde was fourth, and Marina Mueller was fifth. Salisbury Academy’s Taron Lilly won and Emberleigh Pauley-Brown placed second.
