LANDIS — N.C. Department of Transportation contractors have begun making roadway and trackbed improvements to a portion of North Central Avenue between North Main Street and East Taylor Street; prompting a brief closure of the roadway in Landis.

Work began at 9 a.m. today and is expected to be complete by 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5. The work is part of the Salisbury to Kannapolis Railroad Improvements project, which involves constructing approximately 11 miles of second track between Salisbury and Kannapolis as well as other roadway and safety improvements.

From North Central Avenue, motorists will use Main Street, East Ryder Street and North Central Avenue as the detour route.

NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.

This is one of three projects that will provide an uninterrupted double track spanning 92 miles between Greensboro and Charlotte, part of the busiest railroad corridor in North Carolina. The improvements to the rail corridor between Raleigh and Charlotte will increase railroad capacity, efficiency and safety.
