Fire officials say a funeral procession for firefighter Chris Phillips will leave Churchland Fire Department today and end at Catawba College’s Omwake-Dearborn Chapel.

Phillips, 41, died Thursday of an apparent heart attack hours after responding to a fatal vehicle crash in the western part of the county. He’d been a lieutenant with Locke Fire Department since July and before that was an assistant fire chief with the Churchland Fire Department in Linwood.

The funeral procession, which will be made up of an estimated 20 fire trucks as well as other responders, will be escorted from Linwood into Rowan County by law enforcement via Interstate 85, said Locke Fire Chief Rusty Alexander.

Law enforcement officials will block intersections leading through downtown Salisbury to the chapel, Alexander said.

Alexander said he expects the procession to leave Churchland around 1:25 p.m and arrive at Catawba’s chapel just before 2 p.m. The family will receive visitors and friends at 2 p.m. with a memorial service to be held at 3 p.m.
