SALISBURY — Salisbury City Council and the Rowan County Board of Commissioners will join forces Tuesday to honor the Rowan County team which recently captured the Little League Softball World Series Championship in Portland, Ore.

The local boards will recognize the girls and their coaches at the end of Tuesday’s City Council meeting at City Hall, 217 S. Main St. A reception also is planned to honor the team.

Council meets at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Meetings are streamed live at www.salisburync.gov/webcast.

In other agenda items Tuesday, council:

• Will consider the appointment of Bill Burgin as chairman and John Ketner as vice chairman of the Salisbury Tourism and Cultural Development Commission.

• Will consider a budget amendment reflecting $3,230 in donations from the Foundation for the Carolinas. The money will be used to purchase picnic tables for Hurley Park and for a post office box rental for the Elizabeth Holmes Hurley Park Foundation.

• Will consider a resolution to apply to the N.C. Department of Commerce’s building reuse program for a project labeled by the county’s economic development commission as the “Morgan Ridge Reuse Project.” It refers to a proposed restoration of a vacant building, though a location is not given. The city intends to apply for up to $137,500 from the Department of Commerce program. If granted, a $10,000 local match would be required, though Robert Van Geons of RowanWorks says that could come from other grants and incentives, not the city’s budget.

• Will consider the required second reading of a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity to Allow Archie Shavers to add a third vehicle to his Safety Taxi fleet. The additional vehicle would be a 2005 Chrysler van, which seats seven.

• Will consider granting a request from New Sarum Brewery to add a third driveway from North Lee Street into the parking lot at 111 N. Lee St. The owners say a new driveway is needed to accommodate deliveries to the new brewery, which will be located at 109 N. Lee St. A variance is needed because the city code allows only two driveways per street to serve a business or groups of businesses.

• Will consider allowing security lighting to project over a public alley at 322 E. Council St. The city’s engineering department says the proposed box canister flood lighting will not obstruct motorists’ view and will extend less than a foot from the building. It also will have a clear height of 16 feet.
