A Rowan County woman was charged Wednesday after some neighborhood children spotted her breaking into a Bertie Avenue home and a neighbor called law enforcement.

Stephanie Luann Fisher, 31, of the 600 block of Roseman Road, was charged with felony breaking and entering, second-degree trespassing, misdemeanor injury to real property and possession of burglary tools.

Rowan County Sheriff’s officials say they were called to the 5800 block of Bertie Avenue in reference to a possible break-in at a home there. Deputies were told there was a blonde woman in dark shorts breaking into a side window.

A deputy knocked on the front door and some children on bicycles told the deputy the woman he was looking for was around the back. The officer noticed a side window was broken and a chair was pressed against the house with a bucket sitting on it.

The deputy came upon the woman, later identified as Fisher, carrying a bag and walking from the house. The deputy asked to speak with her. The woman asked, “Am I going to jail?” a report said.

The report said Fisher had a cut on her wrists as if from glass or another sharp object.

She told the deputy the man who lived at the property has a DVD player and a cellphone that belonged to her. The deputy asked why she felt the need to break into the property and not call the owner. Fisher said she tried to call the man, but he wouldn’t answer her calls.

She told the deputy she broke the window and gave him permission to check her bag, which contained a crowbar and plastic gloves. The deputy called the property owner, who arrived at home. The owner said he didn’t know why she would break into his home for a DVD player and cellphone.

Fisher then told the officer she was inside for a DVD that she could not name and the cell belonged to her friend. She remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond.

Fisher was convicted of shoplifting, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, driving while impaired, driving while license revoked, larceny and larceny by an employee, all of which are misdemeanor offenses.
