Area Sports Briefs: First win for North volleyball

North Rowan’s volleyball team won 25-14, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-22 against A.L. Brown in Kannapolis on Wednesday.
It was the first victory for the Cavaliers (1-3), who played well in a loss to Davie earlier in the week.
Makala Lytton had 10 aces and 13 kills for the Cavaliers. Aliyah Farmer had seven kills and five aces.
Freshman Bil’lizah Connor had 10 kills.
Brianna White had three blocks. White and Amarriya Harris served well for the Cavaliers.

Prep girls tennis
Salisbury won 9-0 against South Rowan on Wednesday.

Salisbury opened the season with a 9-0 win in Lenoir against Hibriten.
Seniors Kayla Honeycutt, Kathryn Rusher, Grace Steinman and Emily Capito and sophomores Julia Honeycutt and Maria Capito won singles matches.
Kayla Honeycutt-Rusher, Maria Capito-Steinman and Emil Capito-Julia Honeycutt were the winning doubles teams.
Salisbury (2-0) hosts Charlotte Catholic next Tuesday at 4:30 p.m .

East Rowan defeated West Rowan 7-2 on Wednesday.
East winners were Katie Barnes, Lauren Weisensel, Shannon Mahaffey, Alana Miller and Lana Jackson.
Doubles winners for the Mustangs were Weisensel-Mahaffey and Jackson-Kristen Brady.

Prep golf
Salisbury’s Grace Yatawara shot 30 in a season-opening match at Pudding Ridge on Tuesday.
Salisbury’s Shelby Holden shot 42. The Hornets shot 112.
Salisbury plays against Carson at McCanless today at 3:30 p.m.

Intimidators
The Delmarva Shorebirds beat slumping Kannapolis 12-7 on Wednesday night.
Connor Walsh struck out the first seven batters he faced but was charged with the loss.
Michael Suiter had a three-run double for Kannapolis. John Ziznewski had a two-run single, while Toby Thomas had a two-run triple.
The Intimidators and Shorebirds continued their four-game series Thursday.

SAC volleyball
Wingate’s volleyball team has been picked to win the SAC volleyball championship.
The Bulldogs went 34-3, won their ninth straight SAC title and claimed their third-straight Southeast Regional Championship in 2014.
Lenoir-Rhyne was picked second. Tusculum was picked third.
Catawba got a first-place vote but tied with Queens for eighth in the poll.
Catawba’s Alex Hopper is on the preseason All-SAC second team.

Sieria Eagle had 11 kills, while Brittney Hogan had 10.

Olivia Houghton had seven digs. Dajah Glenn and Catherine Johnson had seven assists apiece.

Gray Stone volleyball
Gray Stone won 25-10, 25-9 and 25-12 against Uwharrie Charter Academy on Tuesday.
Ivy Overcash and Megan Frick had 10 kills each for the Knights (3-0). Roni Boss and Caroline Cody had eight assists each.

Gray Stone won 25-16, 25-9 and 25-18 against Mount Pleasant on Wednesday. Megan Frick led with 15 kills. Boss had 11 assists. Cody had eight assists.

Sacred Heart soccer
Sacred Heart’s varsity soccer team won 10-0 against Albemarle’s Park Ridge Christian.
Juan Salazar, Colin Donaldson and Sean Archer scored two goals each. Cole Hansen, Ben Childress, Nick Antosek and Will Koontz had a goal apiece for the Dolphins.
Brody Dillon and Will Webb anchored the defensive effort.
