NC LIVE adds resources for numbers, science and reading

Do you need to look up a phone number or address? ReferenceUSA should be your first stop. This has always been a very popular resource which returned to NC LIVE this year. ReferenceUSA provides access to 24 million U.S. businesses and 235 million U.S. residents. Some popular uses of ReferenceUSA are market research, job searching and corporate information.

AccessScience

Are you a student who needs to do scientific research? AccessScience should be included as a resource you turn to. This online resource includes quality, well-researched reference material including videos and animations. The database provides users with access to 8,500 articles, 17,000 downloadable images, and 3,000 biographies of leading scientific figures. There is also an interactive citation generator as well as links to citable primary sources.

SIRS WebSelect!

Is a new resource recently added to the NC LIVE lineup. SIRS WebSelect! provides access to quality, prescreened Internet resources from around the world. SIRS monitors each site to ensure access and quality information remains available.

ProQuest Research Library

Research Library is another resource new to NC LIVE that provides access to many relevant subjects and topics for both business and scholarly research. This resource includes thousands of full-text articles from a wide variety of journals, professional and trade publications and general interest magazines.

OneClick digital 

OneClick digital is a popular resource that NC LIVE has provided to users for a number years. OneClick digital provides access to downloadable audio books on a variety of subjects, including the latest fiction and nonfiction releases, biographies, classic literature and much more.

Reads to Reels: August Book Bites Club. “Chocolat.” Tuesday, Aug. 25, 6:30 p.m., South Rowan Regional. Escape the ordinary with a delicious discussion of “Chocolat” by Joanne Harris. Copies of the book are available at all three library locations. Screening of the film adaptation of “Chocolat” (PG13), accompanied by a few treats sure to make your mouth water. Friends concert series: BackPorch Bluegrass, headquarters, Tuesday, Aug. 25, 7-9 p.m. The band is from Wilkes County and is known for traditional hard-driving bluegrass. Computer classes: If you’re new to computers or never felt comfortable, Computer Basics is for you. The class will cover the very basics. Tuesday, Aug. 25, 7-8:30 p.m., headquarters.

Literacy: Call the Rowan County Literacy Council at 704-216-8266 for more information on teaching or receiving literacy tutoring for English speakers or for those for whom English is a second  language.

Weekly events for children, Aug. 21-Nov. 30

Baby Time: Loosely interactive, introducing simple stories and songs to babies 6-23 months old with a parent or caregiver. About 30 minutes. Headquarters, Wednesdays, 10 a.m.; East, Mondays, 10 a.m.

Toddler Time: Focused on sharing books, singing songs and encouraging listening skills for children 18-35 months old with parent or caregiver; 30 minutes. Headquarters, Tuesdays, 10:30 a.m.; East, Mondays, 11 a.m.

Tiny Tumblers: Simple stories, musical scarves and instruments for babies 6-23 months old with parent or caregiver. South, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:30 a.m.; 30 minutes.

Preschool Time: Encourages exploration of books and builds reading readiness for children 3-5 years old. Headquarters, Thursdays, 10:30 a.m.; East, Thursdays, 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Noodle Head Story Time: For children 4 and up to enjoy listening to silly books and tales together; 30 minutes. Headquarters, Thursdays, 4 p.m.; South, Mondays, 4 p.m.

Art programs: Activities and instruction based on various themes and media.  Program activities vary by branch. Children 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult; 30-45 minutes. Headquarters, Art in the Afternoon, Thursdays, 4:30 p.m.; East, Emma’s Easel, Thursdays, 4 p.m.; South, Art with Char, Wednesdays, 4 p.m.

Tail Waggin’ Tutors: Children 7 to 9 years old (first to third grade) can reserve a slot to read aloud to a therapy dog by calling the Children’s Room.
