Area Sports Briefs: Yatawara fires 71

Salisbury’s Grace Yatawara shot 1-under 71 in Saturday’s first round of the 13th Joe Cheves Junior Invitational held at Mimosa Hills in Morganton.
Sanford’s Siranon Shoomee shot a first-round 69 for a one-shot lead over five golfers.
Yatawara is in a three-way tie for seventh.
Yatawara birdied three holes (all par-5s). She made two bogeys.
Boys
East Rowan’s Nick Lyerly led local boys with a 2-over 74. Cannon School’s Michael Childress shot 76, while East Rowan’s Logan Shuping shot 80.
A double bogey on No. 17 hurt Lyerly. He had three birdies and three bogeys.
Spencer Ralston of Gainesville, Ga., shot a sizzling 63 for the first-round lead.
The tournament concludes today.

Prep basketball
East Rowan announced Friday that Kurt Misenheimer will be the school’s head boys basketball coach.
Trey Ledbetter resigned in July after five seasons at the helm. Misenheimer has been a jayvee coach and varsity assistant for Ledbetter with the Mustangs.
He was a fine player for East, graduating in 2007.
Misenheimer’s sister, Brooke, coaches the Carson girls basketball team.

Minor leagues
Saturday night’s game between the Kannapolis Intimidators and the Savannah Sand Gnats was postponed due to rain and unplayable field conditions at Grayson Stadium.
Kannapolis (24-30 second half, 59-64 overall) will make up the game as part of a doubleheader with two seven-inning games today, starting at 12:35 p.m.
Brooks update
Craig Brooks (Catawba) has been sharp in his last four relief appearances for the Eugene Emeralds in Oregon.
In that span, Brooks (2-0) struck out 11 in five innings while allowing no walks and one hit.
Lomascolo
Nick Lomascolo (Catawba) has had a fine season as a reliever for the Peoria Chiefs, a St. Louis farm club in the Class-A Midwest league.
Lomascolo is 2-2 with a 2.05 ERA in 34 games.
Lomascolo has fanned 66 in 57 innings and has walked 29. He’s allowed only two homers this year.
Parnell
In 23 relief appearances this season for the New York Mets, Bobby Parnell (East Rowan), trying to come back from Tommy John surgery, has posted a 5.59 ERA.
He’s struggled since the All-Star break and is now on the disabled list.
Parnell will be a free agent after the season, and it’s possible, he’s thrown his last pitch for the Mets. He’s been in the Mets organization since he was drafted out of Charleston Southern in 2005.

North Hills soccer
North Hills lost to Tri-City Christian 3-1.
Colin Turner had the goal for the Eagles.
Colin Lewis made 26 saves. North Hills was out-shot 29-4.

East Diamond Sports
East Rowan Diamond Sports will hold fall registration at Rockwell Elementary on Friday, Aug. 28 from 5-8 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 29, from 9 until noon.
These are the only on-site registrations.
