50th anniversary ‘Sound of Music’ celebration

Salisbury comes alive with the Sound of Music tomorrow evening. Third annual Spencer Shops Train Show

SPENCER — The third annual Historic Spencer Shops Train Show will transform the Bob Julian Roundhouse from historic building to railfan paradise Aug. 22-23 at the N.C. Transportation Museum.

This show is one of just a few across the country to take place surrounded by railroading history, in the Bob Julian Roundhouse, the largest remaining roundhouse in North America.

In addition to vendors and all types of railroad memorabilia, the show will feature three different options to ride the rails. The N.C. Transportation Museum’s passenger train will be pulling 1950s era passenger cars that take the visitor on a ride back in time. An above-the-rails view will be offered by the Caboose Train, as a diesel locomotive pulls six colorful cabooses. Red Springs and Northern Railroad will also be operating motor cars, smaller track maintenance vehicles, providing visitors with an open-air ride. On the smaller scale of railroading, model railroaders will be stationed across the museum property, with N, HO, G, S and even Z scale models represented. The event will also feature a “golden spike” ceremony to dedicate the new Cackalacky Railroad Model Train, now running in the museum’s Gift Station. Tickets are available at www.nctrans.org, 704-636-2889, or on the day of the event.

 

Fin, Feather and Fur Outdoor and Off Road Expo
The second Fin, Feather and Fur Outdoor and Off Road Expo is coming to the Rowan County Fairgrounds on Aug. 28-30, thanks to Blue Line Creative and the Rowan County Fair Association.

The expo consists of three days of hunting, fishing, camping, off-road and outdoor vendors in the brand new building, old building and outside on the midway. There will be much more to do and see, including  •  The Southern Divisional Mud Racing Championships (two-day mud racing event), Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 6 p.m.   •  The Rumble In Rowan (Demolition Derby) Sunday at 1 p.m. There will be fully prepared car on location that will be raffled off to drive in the event  •  A 3D archery tournament (men and woman, hunter and pro divisions) with Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD), USA Archery Coach Brittany Bomann present to teach the youngsters proper archery techniques  •  Husqvarna master chainsaw sculptor Chad Gainey  •  Food and sweets vendors on the midway  •  Seminars in the main building.

Back Porch Bluegrass in concert

From the Back Porch to the Stanback Auditorium, join RPL for a free concert with this Wilkes County-based group known throughout the state for its traditional hard-driving bluegrass style. Members are David Culler, founder and vocals/guitar; Tony Joines, banjo; Wes Tuttle, mandolin/fiddle; and Jim Matthews, upright Bass. This performance is Tuesday, Aug. 25 at Rowan Public Library, 201 W. Marc Hoffman, joined by bassist Sean Tarleton, plays tonight in Rock Hill, SC at the Anne Springs Close Greenway Amphitheater at 6 p.m. The cost is $5. Hoffman will perform with his quartet Saturday at the Annual Summerfest in York, SC. Joining him will be sax player Patrick Brown, bassist Tim Hartis, and drummer Brent Deaton.
