Jimmie Higgins provided this photo of students and teacher of the Rowan Cotton Factory School. The photograph was part of a 1994 Heritage Calendar published by F&M Bank and Historic Salisbury Foundation. In his book “Rowan County, a Brief History,” the late historian James Brawley wrote, “Founded in 1830, the Rowan Cotton Factory at first prospered. However, by 1860, the factory had closed. The building was used instead for a school operated by Davidson College, which had acquired it from Maxwell Chambers, the last private owner.” Teachers shown in this photograph are identified as Grace Tyson and Etta Fraley.
