Early College Jr. Civitan wins awards

The Rowan County Early College Jr. Civitan Club received the “2015 International Honor Club of Distinction” award recently.

Student Janssen Keiger received the “International Officer of the Year” award. These honors were presented recently at the Jr. Civitan International Conference held in Orlando, Fla.

Theresa Pierce is the teacher/adviser.

North Hills project wins third at Jr. Civitan Convention

The North Hills Christian School Junior Civitan Club was honored at the 35th Annual Junior Civitan International Convention held in Orlando, Fla., for their commitment of service to the community.

The Junior Civitan club won third place for their campus project of supporting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by raising more than $4,000.

North Hills Christian School collected 40,005 pennies, 4,354 nickels, 6,325 dimes, 6,083 quarters, and various amounts of dollar bills. Students even turned in coins from many other countries and territories outside of the United States, including Canada, Mexico, Namibia, France, Cayman Islands, Singapore, Bahamas, Brazil and Europe. All of the money collected goes to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to aid in the search for a cure for cancer and provide medical help to those in need.

North Hills’ Junior Civitan Club consists of more than 50 members and is led by high school instructor Constance McGrail.

First United Church of Christ scholarships

Salisbury’s First United Church of Christ awarded $1,000 scholarships to six youth members of the congregation for the 2015-16 academic year.

The scholarship monies come from the annual church budget, awards from the First United Church of Christ Foundation and donations from members and friends of the church.

First year recipients are Hunter Bernhardt and Tyler Bernhardt, who will attend Catawba College. They are the sons of Lynn and Jeff Bernhardt.

Renewal recipients are Catawba student Alex Lee, son of Melody and Brian Lee; University of South Carolina student Skyler Mikkelson, son of Winnie and Dan Mikkelson; Caldwell Community College student Christian Shuping, son of Patty and Mark Shuping; and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College student Jonathon Shuping, son of Patty and Mark Shuping.

Hunter and Tyler Bernhardt also received Lightbourne scholarships awarded by the United Church of Christ Church Women of the Southern Conference.

City partnering with Communities in Schools for School Tools Campaign

The city of Salisbury will partner with Communities in Schools of Rowan County to collect items for its annual School Tools Campaign. School Tools is an annual project of Communities in Schools held during August to bring good people together to make essential school supplies available to children who would otherwise go without.

Needed items include backpacks, notebook paper, pencils, crayons, colored pencils, three-ring binders and rulers.

The School Tools Campaign began Aug. 3 and supplies can be dropped off at one of the following city sites: City Hall, 217 S. Main St.; Customer Service Center, 1415 S. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave.; City Office Building, 132 N. Main St.; Fire Station 1, 514 E. Innes St.; Police Department, 130 E. Liberty St.; Civic Center, 315 Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave.; Hall Gym, 1400B W. Bank St.; and City Park, 316 Lake Drive.

Last year Communities in Schools packed more than 500 bookbags with supplies for students in need.  The city will collect the donated supplies through Aug. 19, and then all donations will be given to Communities in Schools for distribution as the new school year gets underway. Please support the children in our community who are counting on our help to get them started for school this year.

Home school association vendor fair

The Rowan County Home School Association will host a fall vendor fair Aug. 11 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Life Church, 710 Jake Alexander Blvd. Registration for new members and membership renewals will be at 6:15 p.m. The vendor fair is open to Rowan County Home School Association members only.
